  1. Hi
Once Burqa and now purdah. France wouldn’t approve! Phlegm reminded of Achmed.

    11a head priest=PR+turn=U,HAD

Missed on 17d, same doubt on 26d

Off for a week. Leave you with a delightful clue from Jeffrey Archer’s ‘Shall we tell the President’:
Gathering of those in favour of buccaneering (10)

  2. Good morning folks:

    1A - nice clue.

    14A - brought a smile.

21A - Poor clue, made me recall the BENGAL-BENGALI discussion here.

33A - Can Monsieur ( = 'Mister' in French) be equivalent of SIR? Poetic licence...

    8D - a cute clue.

    12D - Liked this.

17D - GASCONADE - this flashed at once, having used it in a humour piece recently after a Google search. The intention was to play a pun with GAS.

26A - Same doubt about OLL from college.

Deepak, you may have recalled the forced stopovers we used to have at city entrances ('octroi gates').

  5. Puzzling over whether (I mean 'weather'?) this is English/American/Indian, and trying out possible misspellings is not my idea of a fun puzzle.

    Looking forward to Monday!

NB (yeah, throw in French as well)- From a recent English Whirled Wide video clip: We should all lurn to right like that, shouldn't I?

  6. I just didn't get 6 DN. target = house = theatre? Can someone throw some light?

  7. @ LNS - It's all guesswork or imagination being stretched. Target of a movie exhibitor or theatre person is a (full) HOUSE. ;-)

  8. LNS,

6D: I think it's to do with curling (the sport). The target there is called "house."

  9. LNS @ 9:04,
I only know that if the House threw Light it would be classified a lighthouse ;-)
