Hi everyone:
ReplyDeleteOnly 28A, 20D, 25D and 27D eluded me. A little more effort, perhaps, would have helped. But find it difficult not to have a peek at the blog at 8-30 am sharp. It has become a habit.
In many cases, Mr Guesswork came handy. Many annos are not entirely clear. Yet to check from the blog answers.
1A - Grid yet to be filled in would have sounded better. It is irritating to find hyphens where not needed. (It is another matter if hyphens are missed out where they are absolutely necessary.) Additional care on the part of setters would be in place.
4A - what machine? Instead of the machine, a single word beginning with T would have worked better.
29A - 'Once absorbed in TV - 'T-I-V', 2D - MARGARITA, 6D - MELAMINE, 23D - Clue on Demi Moore: Liked these.
Correction:
ReplyDeleteLast sentence above to read: '29A - One absorbed...'.
26 - Back again caught in identical traditions briefly (4,4) - ON{C}E MORE Anno pending
ReplyDeleteanno for the second part: MORE(-s)(conventions)
17a looks like extra words due to cut and paste devil! I had put FIREARM for 12d. Sandhya beat me to the MORE anno for 26a . Identical could mean 'one' (and the same) sort of usage. Am nonplussed by 20d, 25d and 27d.
ReplyDelete23d Demi reminded of GI Jane.
ReplyDelete27 D - All the while - During, and something dropped from this?
ReplyDelete17 - Stopped the endless detrimental kind of language in the beginning (10) - TERMINATED(l)*
ReplyDeleteWhat is 'kind of language in the beginning' doing in the clue?
(TERMIN)OLOGY - kind of language in the beginning.
18 - It is the feature of an Indian flag (9) - TRICOLOUR [CD]
ReplyDeleteWhy 'an' Indian flag? Also, the Tricolour itself is the flag. It is not a feature, according to me.
Didn't notice this earlier but I wonder where the H in Bismuth came from and like Richard said what is Machine doing here?
ReplyDelete'endless detrimental' and 'language in the beginning' both point to the letter L so why repeat it?
ReplyDelete@giridhar,
ReplyDeleteRegarding DUNG from DURING, RI appears to be some find of fittings NJ has in mind or at home!
Suresh, Where are you? Please come and rescue us with FITTINGS = RI. :-)
ReplyDelete6 DN: strangely enough 'mela' as in 'melanin' or 'melatonin' stands for black, not 'fair'. Sure learnt something new today with 'mela' and 'marg'.
ReplyDelete@ LNS, the other kind of 'mela', the village fair, is well known in the northern part of the country, where twin (juDwa) brothers are lost and are reunited after 15 reels or two and a half hours, whichever is later. :)
ReplyDelete'Marg' is a common name for city roads in the north, like Lala Lajpatrai Marg and Panchsheel Marg.
I liked the 'whichever is later' bit.
ReplyDeleteFor the attention of Ajit fans and Bollywood movie buffs:
ReplyDeleteMac Mohan (71), a regular sidekick of Ajit's and a lovable salt-and-pepper-haired actor, who shot to fame in his Sholay role as Sambha, died in Mumbai on Monday, May 10.
He was suffering from lung cancer for some time. His other memorable roles were in Zanjeer, Bombay to Goa and many others.
He was the maternal uncle of Raveena Tandon, erstwhile heroine of Bollywood movies.
Arre oh Sambha, alvida !
27D: My guess is this...
ReplyDeleteDUR (-r) + (-i) ING = DUNG i.e. dropping/ detaching the endmost (either way) alphabets fitted onto the first (DU) and latter part (NG) of dirt's definition.
Well I can think of no other connection between FITTING and RI
Regarding mela who can forget the loan mela under the Poojari (Fin Min) regime
ReplyDelete@Subramaniam: I associated 'fair' with connotations such as color, just etc. The fun fair aspect did not suggest itself to me. Of course from there to 'mela' would have been another jump. Not sure I'd have made it even if I know the word.
ReplyDeleteI think my aging grey cells need rejiggering for NJ :)
