Hi
ReplyDeleteBANDITS at 10 O’clock, coming out of the sun ! Reminded of THE BLUE MAX, THE RED BARON, TORA TORA TORA.
I was a little LU(KEW)ARM* about FAMILIAR and KEY-NES<-. Belated IWD REGARDS to ER(I)CA* and ALISON*(-i).
17 - Soak us at first badly over payments (8) - {SATU*}{RATE} What's the role of 'first' in the clue?
ReplyDeleteMaybe he means 'us at'badly is at first and over 'rate
19 - Tied to lawman, so flattered him like a sycophant (7) - {T{OAD}IED} Anno pending.
may be: tied to DA*, butwhere did the extra T go?
Re TOADIED
ReplyDeleteI can guess the setter's intended anno but it IS defective. It has seen the light on Indian soil. Would it have seen the light on the UK soil?
5 - Move forward to make progress (7) - ADVANCE [E]
ReplyDeleteDD
Liked the SUCKER cartoon :P
ReplyDeleteMove forward to inch further to make progress to step in the front and forge ahead
ReplyDeleteA quintuple definition! Can anyone improve it?
Lend money to move forward to inch further to make progress to step in the front and forge ahead
ReplyDelete(a bit of standing on the shoulder of giants there !)
Lend money beforehand to move forward to inch further to make progress to step in the front and forge ahead
ReplyDeletePromote pawn and offer to set up attack so as to further aid progress of champion (7)
ReplyDeleteI lost count of how many definitions are in this sentence..
Can anyone please clarify?
ReplyDelete--Is seance a mere meeting? Is that the definition...
Serenade-- To serenade is not to enetertain but a form of entertainment so how does this define
Also how does one get Red in 20a for reduce?
ReplyDeleteAnd more than one gal in a CW makes it too many...
Ajay,
ReplyDeleteNothing wrong with 'seance' and 'serenade'. Red comes from'left'
Thanks colonel for the red should have been obvious.
ReplyDeleteMy OED says seaance:a meeting at which spiritualists attempt to make contact with the dead.So it is not merely any meeting....Please clarify.
and am not very satisfied with the serenade def. too
Ajay,
ReplyDeleteThe first two words of the definition from your OED says it all. Where is the doubt?
ajay. SERENADE is also used a as a verb as per my OED. So nothing wrong in that. While SEANCE is not any meeting it is a meeting, so I guess it is ok.
ReplyDeleteDid not know that Bandits could be enemy aircraft. Only knew two toed tree toads and three toed tree toads, but never knew they could be toadied.
Re TOADIED: my guess is that it comes from TIED + DAO.
ReplyDeleteDAO = District Attorney's Office
BANDIT: nice clue, term probably originated during WWI, if my memories of Biggles serve me right
Looks like Manna likes Irish boys
ReplyDeletehI Colonel and Suresh, Both of you are right but somehow the clues dont entirely satisfy me. But anyway its great to air and discuss and sort out one's doubts.
ReplyDeleteThese days am holed up at home owing to a fracture of my foot so am able to do the crossword earlier in the day and compare notes. Else I usually leave the crossword for when i take the delhi metro and only look at the blog late night. Are there any Delhi folks who visit these pages too and are crossword aficionados
I was at Delhi for more than 30 years and moved to Chennai last year after my retirement. I have been doing crossword for the last 40 years (the addiction started when I was at IIT Madras), but bumped into this blog only last month and this has really rekindled my love towards cryptic crossword.
