ReplyDeleteHAPPY VINAYAKA CHATURTHI !
ReplyDeleteWell, I know 1d.
ReplyDeleteIt reminded me of the joke where a Pole who looked at the last line of an eye chart with ‘ZCWSXY’ and remarked that he knew him.
One difference between gridman and the previous setter, is that even though we have an obscure ( to me ) animal, the answer is actually attainable from the clue, rather than demanding an encyclopaedic knowledge of flora and fauna.
ReplyDelete25 - Animal penned by many a landowner (5) - NYALA [T]
ReplyDeleteReminded me of the Nyali bride between Mombasa and Malindi.
Please insert a g in the bride above !
ReplyDeleteTomorrows special will be up at 8 AM (as I have to make a trip to the hospital with my m-i-l)and the restriction will be 4 PP (ie 4 answers per commenter) till I find that no more solutions are forthcoming.

ReplyDeleteThoroughly enjoyed both the cartoons.

ReplyDeleteReminded me of a Akbar-Birbal story (titled 'GaDDa yeLadavnige miTTai' - Sweet for a beard puller), which applies equally well to moustaches.

Happy Vinayak Chathurthi to all! Ganesha was kind, eased thru' this quickly. Loved 6D, 'essay' for 'go for'. Just one nit to pick: the use of 'endless' to indicate 'S' in 22D.
ReplyDeleteTry:
ReplyDeleteStarting trouble heard in the golf links (3)
I quite liked "endless" - it made me smile. Think it's clever word play to split words and then reinterpret their meaning.
ReplyDeleteTee-ing off apropos 933 and the chap mentioned in 15a:
ReplyDeleteJIMMY:
Picture you upon my knee
Just tea for two
And two for tea
Just me for you
And you for me...alone-
A happy Ganesh Chaturthi to all friends out here.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, does anyone remember 'Come September'?
Anyone who was a movie-goer in the Sixties will never forget the movie.I saw it in theatre when I was in college as a PU student. The title song was very popular and one that echoed from every patti-thotti in Tamil Nadu - areas from where people might have never gone to an English movie.

Deepak:
ReplyDeleteWhy this Hitchcockian suspense on your 2nd Sept special ?
Hope your M-i-L is ok?
Could someone please explain how 1A is an &lit? I thought it was a CD.
ReplyDeleteThe whole clue has to be red to get the definition Navaneet
ReplyDeleteRaju,
ReplyDeleteJust building up the hype for the special that's all.
M-i-l is fine she had a finger nail surgically removed day before yesterday and has to go for its dressing tomorrow.
Suresh,
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I understand. How does it differ from a CD then?
Navneeth Read discussion on July 26
ReplyDeleteBut 1A here does not have a subsidiary indication, as Chaturvasi called it. Or does it?

ReplyDeleteInferior to a city slicker = {SUB}{URBANITE}
Thanks, Colonel.
ReplyDelete@Gridman- I am a newbie but not really happy with a couple of clues.
ReplyDelete"Grandmother embraces one former President in blissful state (7)" - {N{I}{RV}ANA}
How do we narrow down to Indian prez RV? Is former prez always RV?
Nyala - I really don't get it why you guys bring in such obscure flora and fauna. I am surprised that people have chided NJ for her obscure animal references but this is not very easy either! Maybe it is straightforward for the seasoned pros, but for newbies it is very tough! Or is your target audience professional solvers?
