Very elegant crossword.
ReplyDeleteI too thought that love letter was very clever.
Thanks Bhavan
ReplyDeleteGood one. Didn't know that card also meant a funny character (in 13D)!
ReplyDeleteYes, card sounds quite an old fashioned term. And in modern usage it would also have undertones of being funny as they were quaint with old fashioned charm.
ReplyDeleteInteresting one! Had to google Sullom Voe, though clearly it was an anagram and with the crossings, options were limited. Put Cheque 'Hand' instead of 'Card' -- hurry to get done I suppose. Good Sunday stuff!
ReplyDelete12 - Getting on train for Greyfriars, say (8,6) - {BOARDING} {SCHOOL}
ReplyDeleteReminded of ole portly Billy Bunter, the owl of the Remove and by association Hurree Jamset Ram Singh, whose esteemfulness was terrific.

ReplyDeleteGreat to find another BB lover. Could get very few titles during my school days -- have been collecting them now over the years!
8 - Firm decision about suspension (10) - {RE}{SOLUTION } RESOLUTION
ReplyDeleteIMO, suspension is NOT equal to solution.
Bhala, welcome to the club. Incidentally, I grew up on a staple of Blyton, Biggles, BB, Bobsey Twins etc. Do you have all the Magnet ones?
How could I forget Bill Brown?
ReplyDeleteKishore @ 13.10-
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on the 'solution'.Filled it doubtfully due to crossings.
On second thoughts, going back to Chemistry suspension is a type of solution ( solid particles suspended in a liquid)
ReplyDeleteI don't buy it, Paddy. Solutions and suspensions are two different types of mixtures. Solution involves dissolving of a solute in a solvent and cannot be separated by decanting/filtering. In a suspension, there is no 'dissolving', the particles are large enough to settle down given time ie sedimentation. Colloids are also not solutions, but the particles are too small to settle down.
ReplyDeleteThe only funny thing is colloids are called colloidal suspensions and also colloidal solutions, bringing us back to wondering if both are same.
Referring to your last paragraph, this is what our uncle (read Google) says-"Colloidal solutions (also called colloidal suspensions) are the subject of interface and colloid science. This field of study was introduced in 1861 by Scottish scientist Thomas Graham.
ReplyDeleteThis is the link-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colloid
So,there you are !
CV Sir, can you throw some light? little light = no light, I suppose. Why little or no light given in 25a?
ReplyDeletePaddy, thanks.
ReplyDeleteThe suspension that you have given solves the solution in respect of the question.
:-)
Ram
ReplyDeleteI think 'little' generally means 'not much'. As you say, it could also mean 'not at all'.
When we say 'little light', 'little' is an adj, and there is a strong suggestion that there is some light.
As the word reqd is DARK, the clue writer makes it quite clear that there is no light at all, and so he writes 'little or no light'.
If it is written "...no light" (without the preceding word 'little') it doesn't read well.
This is my reading.
Hello, Chaturvasi. I'd been wondering where you'd been.
ReplyDelete@Kishore 13:10
ReplyDeleteAgree that was our staple diet during school days, with William and Jennings thrown in for good measure.
Yeah, I do have quite a few of the Magnet reprints, including some of the early ones which I picked up as limited editions, the ones where the Famous Five get together. Our friend Billy comes across in a slightly different light in those issues.
