Regarding 5d, special message to Richard:
ReplyDeleteI had NO-CLO.
Bhavan,
ReplyDeleteIRIS comes from the greek word for a Rainbow. See thw Wiki link.
The theme suggests this crossword is out of the world : )
ReplyDeleteNot to be overly critical, but I found 9A,3D,5D clues dodgy in cryptic reading.
On the plus side there were some really good clues 6A, 18D especially.
@Colonel, thanks. I hadn't followed the link you had given. Was just going by the dictionary.
ReplyDeleteFinally got to do a THC without worrying about plagiarism - it was Neyartha's own style. Thanks Ganesh!
ReplyDeleteSome queries/grouses:
4D: When the definition is 'The oval' and the answer expects an adjective, I find it a bit difficult and unfair. Same case with SUNDER in 27A.
15A: I think it should be 'such twins' as the answer is an adjective. An E clue at the best?
24A: Peculiar fodder. Luna Gauri?
18D: Bill=Nose was new to me. Liked it.
10A: I was looking for a synonym for 'Balance'. And at last we are supposed to ignore the 'of the' following Balance. Unfair again!
That's it from me. And yeah, the theme, as always with N, is nebulous this time also :P
In any crossword, if queries come after appreciation (with at least three solvers above deploying wordplay to express it), it is one thing.
ReplyDeleteIf just queries come, it's another!
Investigate sign of envy in a very slow person (5)
ReplyDeleteIt was nice solving today's crossword. However, I'm not convinced with a couple of clues esp. the ones where there are letters to be substituted.
ReplyDeleteIn 9A, "A replacement for the Island's sacred plant" is to be translated as "A is a replacement for I in TULSI." They don't seem like they carry the same meaning. And the clue doesn't spell out where the substitution is done. Apostrophe that follows "the island" is misleading.
In 5D, "Pole getting rid of the chief minister's dais" means S is put in place of M in AMBO (dais). Firstly, as I see it, getting rid of somebody/ something is not the same as taking somebody's place. And here again the clue doesn't clearly say where the letters are to be substituted.
Otherwise, a very good puzzle.
Really enjoyed today's puzzle, and also had a dual advantage what with the UK news being full of ASBOs and living in the land of the Nairs.
ReplyDelete@Sudalamami
ReplyDeleteI think Balance refers to libra the zodiac sign whose symbol is a set of scales or balance
Yes DD, I thought so too. That is why I listed Libra in my list.

Can those with sharper memories than mine help? I had a sense of deja vu with several clues and began to feel I might have solved a similar puzzle some time ago. ... Perhaps they are simply common crossword fodder – no criticism implied...
