ReplyDeleteI hear James was very happy in Delhi yesterday. Shaken, not stirred.
11 - Bought somewhere other than here (3,7) - NOT PRESENT [DD?]
Was it supposed to be :
Bought sometime other than now (3,7)
Then DD would fit
Thought not present was fine
ReplyDeleteBought = not a present
Somewhere other than here = away = not present
Much of the rest I found heavy going. Off to find solace in the online version of The Guardian
CVasi Sir: Read your letter in The Hindu today and appreciated it. Re: the same issue, there was a news item in The Hindu with the bloomer "Mr. Suresh Kumar said that he had learnt about the attempt to demolish the residence through the media. “Internationally renowned writer R.K. Narayan is a Kannadiga and it is our responsibility to protect and preserve his house,” he said." As far as I know, Narayan was Tamilian.
ReplyDeleteI think it is rather unfortunate that people wake up to heritage rather late.It seems development overtakes heritage very quickly before anyone realises.
ReplyDelete11A-DD from DD?
ReplyDeleteAs Kishore suggests, somewhere and here make one think it relates to a place and not time.Perhaps we have to be careful not to be misled.
Padmanabhan,
ReplyDeleteSee David's 9:17
Today's Guardian full of facial hair too:

ReplyDeleteI haven't done that crossword and I don't know what words were used for FH.
But, offhand, I will try a couple:
FH has daily accepting falsehood (7)
Some kothwal rushes exhibiting FH (6)
FH female, primarily uppity, sung comically (6)
Wonder if any of these was treated in that crossword.
None of the above used, but I especially like your last one.
ReplyDeletePerhaps I should try to cultivate some FH - on the plane from Delhi to Kochi, I was the only male without any.
Good ones CV
ReplyDeleteDoes any out there do the Daily Indian Express Cryptics? Theyb are quite tricky at times.
ReplyDeleteIn yestersday's issue -there was a clue: Drug is removed with the fingers.-- Answer I could put in was DIGITAL. The only one possible. However, though digits have to do with fingers, I could not figure out the annotation. A bit NJ-esque. Can any one throwe a light, liter
ally?
I know this forum is only for Hindu Xwords but yet-- My curiosity will kill that poor cat, if I don't get it right.
Raju this must be from DIGITALIS, which is a kind of drug, with IS removed
ReplyDeleteDD, FH is man-datory in Kerala.
ReplyDelete"CHAR-LIE, that WALRUS(T) show was F-U-N,"GUS*sie Finknottle said.

ReplyDeleteYou may not be aware that an Orkut community called Crosswordmania solves the NIE crossword on a daily basis.
I was once a regular there but I don't take part in it nowadays for some reasons.
Also -
Digitalis is a plant, I think. Drug that is extracted from it is digitalin. This is prescribed for remedy of heart ailment. Jaggu, if he visits here late in the evning, will confirm.
Digitalis is given as a drug in the freedicdtionary quoting from Collins.
ReplyDeleteQuite a lot of FH today, after having a lot of Barbaras yesterday.
ReplyDeleteOED too
ReplyDeleteDigitalis is a drug used in the treatment of heart failure. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digitalis
ReplyDeleteGoogle gives me a CLEVE hill. Maybe this explains Cleveland. Maybe Manna is visiting there on his US trip and thought up this clue.
ReplyDelete@kishore hehe ;-)
ReplyDeleteI have had my usually long hair shorn very short (the monsoon humidity meant I was sporting an Afro that was visible from space) so FH is quite possibly the answer - put me in a mundu and I'll be practically invisible.
In Tamil films often when a man is really angry, people would say 'avan meesai thudikkirathu' (meaning his moustache is trembling).
ReplyDeleteIn the illustration that the Col has selected for 10a, we see that happening!
CV sir,
ReplyDeleteYes , As mentioned earlier Digitalis is a plant from which the drug digoxin extracted and used in the treatment of Heart failure .Being a general surgeon I do not use it much. This was one of the clues which I got yesterday without any problem.
I can say it for sure: Manna isn't a chess player. :P
