ReplyDeleteCV,
ReplyDeleteI wonder if you will be able to get hold of TH 1 ie., the first one that appeared in The Hindu
I can. I have a copy of Puzzle No. 1. When do you want me to post it?
DeleteA couple of clues from Puz No. 1 are quoted in Chapter for 1971 in David Astle's book Cluetopia.
I provided the author with some research material for that chapter.
Send it to me I shall post it on the first Sunday of 2014
DeleteI have sent by email a scanned copy of THC No. 1.
DeleteIt was published anonymously but we know that it was by Adm R D Katari.
Please find out if any permission is to be obtained from the paper/family of the Admiral or if the ack.
Courtesy: the family of the Admiral and the paper
is enough when it is published in the public forum here.
I think an acknowledgement that it is TH 1 with date of publication should be sufficient. I shall not mention the name of the setter
DeleteCV,
DeleteThe Hindu Crossword No. 1 which appeared on February 15, 1971 must be having nostalgic memories for you. You had mentioned about solving it just after your marriage while on a holiday in Kerala with your new bride. As you draw an eloquent word image so succintly: "She excused my engagement with the puzzle for a few minutes as she sat there twirling the thali around her neck".
Interestingly, another retired naval officer, Commodore Norman Edward Warner, had set the crosswords for Hindu for about three years around the end of 1970s. He had received instructions on setting from Admiral Katari, his neighbour in Sainikpuri. Shuchi's blog also mentions this. Afflicted with progressive Motor Neuron Disease, Admiral Katari was then finding it difficult to hold the pencil and keep it steady. He passed away from this ailment in 1983.

compensating for duplication:
Delete26A Duck restrict the view (7) {O}{PINION}
15A {TUT}{TI <=} ( Not sure what the reversal indicator is )
ReplyDelete{TUT}{TI*}
DeleteRender is an Anagram Indicator.
RENDER also has a meaning - 'to give in return' as in "He had to render an apology for his rudeness".
DeleteThus, it could be taken as a Reversal Indicator.
Compensating :
ReplyDelete20D {SPIRITS} CD
Setter Guess : Manna
ReplyDeleteReasoning : 6D,3D,15A, 26A and possibly 19A
That should have been 25A not 15A

ReplyDeleteVenkatesh,
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed the nice timely quote from Gridman leaves one in no doubt about his first love!
CV,
ReplyDeleteI think it is time to reveal the identity of the setter.
Col & Cv,
Looking forward to go back in time on the first Sunday of 2014.
The new management of The Hindu could compile all the crosswords set by Admiral Katari and commission introductory notes / annotations by CV, Shuchi and other experts. This can be published in volumes and would be extremely useful as a guide to all solvers - beginners and advanced, and an invaluable help in popularising this pastime.
ReplyDeleteI was around 2 years and a few months old when the first THC seems to have been published. Wistfully wishing that I had got hooked on closer to then rather than closer to now. But getting to see all the old gems seems rather exciting.
