    In a hurry I classified 33d as 'rev anag'. I don't think that is correct. Still thinking.

    Operation suggested by answer done by the setter and given!

      The setter seems to be familiar with place-names in Karnataka. Malavalli and Maddur in Mandya district are known for a delicacy - Maddur wada.

      For those who are distantly placed - Mandya is the Lok Sabha constituency from where the popular star of the southern movie circuit, Ramya, also known as Divya Spandana, won from Congress in a keenly-fought by-election, a few months ago.

      Maddur, which lies between Bangalore and Mysore, is the native place of SM Krishna and also the constituency he used to represent in the Assembly when he was CM.
      Maddur Vada is made of rice flour, semolina and maida flour mixed with sliced onion, curry leaves, grated coconut and asafoetida and then fried in little amount of oil and mixed with water to make a soft dough. A small amount of dough is then made into a patty and deep fried in oil until it turns golden-brown.

    I still say 33d is not a simple reversal.
    As I said it is an unusual clue - I don't mean to say it is very original device from the current setter - but I need an accurate description of the clue-type. Perhaps Balderdash will make some sense out of it by belying his name.

      Like you, I do not know how to classify the type of clue in 33d and the other example below:

      GEGS (9,4)

      for SCRAMBLED EGGS.

      For long, I've been putting it under the anagram family, rightly or wrongly.

    Also, the ref. in the title "The Vertebra above the Axis" refers to the Atlas and you will find the four directions, equator and various geographical places etc. in relative positions as they would appear in the Atlas.

    Good and simple crossword from Balderdash.It hardly took a few minutes to fill up the grid. Tell me, Balderdash, did you find it easier to set a puzzle like this with three, four and five letter words? No long phrases or words ! Is it why there were so many participants?
