  4. Qn: Why is the power apparatus on an electric train called 'pantograph'?

    1. For the simple reason that it resembles the Pantograph shown above

    2. This design of interlocking arms which can extend and retract is also seen in:
      a. The support for telephone stands of yore as well as some contraptions to hang cllothes
      b. The prop used by Bhangra dancers

  5. I remember those old telephone stands when you could neither have a long chord nor a mobile hand set. There also used to be instruments one main telephone with 2 extensions and a telephone operator. Now they may look so silly and outdated.

    1. The extensions were usually powered by a large 9v battery usually attached to a furniture leg with sticking plaster

    2. And there will be a plugged in charger for the batteries. Looks like centuries ago in the era of smart phones.
      Communications is one line that seems to have developed by leaps and bounds and we, in India, seem to catch up with the rest of the world.
