  25. Vaguely remembered that it is not customary to refer living persons and business names in crosswords ( c.f. Putin and Tendulkar). Can some of the experienced solvers / setters clarify this?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Lost count of the number of times Trump and Modi have been referred to. It would be a problem when the names are used in an unedifying context.

      Delete
    2. That's a rule only for The Times(London) crossword. All other crosswords have no such rule.

      Delete
    3. But The Times also of late has accepted references to living persons; so that you have references to Putin, Trump, Biden.
Sample this clue from Sunday Times 4847:
Citizen taking the pee out of Trump? (8)
      (-p)RESIDENT.

  26. And should it not be essentially instead of basically?

    1. Basically means essentially, fundamentally, at the core of it
