    2. I think it is a CD with play on the word "races" (which refers to the human race here)
EUGENIC is about improvement i.e. better management of the (human) race.

    1. Tourney is correct - i wonder if it can be classified as an &lit though as WP seems not present in any cryptic form

      Delete
    2. Could be CD - "tie" referring to the neckwear in surface reading. Tourney is a collection of ties (i.e. matches)

      Delete
    3. It is a CD. CD clue works on difference between literal/ obvious surface reading v. cryptic reading of the same surface.

Sports ties are specific categories of ties mostly related to a specific team or club . Many also collect such ties.

Hence the normal reading points towards physical collection of actual sports ties.

Cryptic reading requires ' sports ties' to be read as sports matches. Tourney/Tournament = many sports ties.

Same principle applies to 'management of races'. Normal reading points towards horse racing or car racing or similar event management.

Cryptic reading requires reading of races = ethnic groups and hence Eugenic.

CD's success lies divergence between the literal or normal reading and cryptic reading. In that aspect, both clues divergence is not wide i.e. solver will come to cryptic reading quite soon.

Nevertheless that doesn't take away CD tag of the clue!

    4. Management Race we have not come across in any situation. It seems competition w.r.to one another. we perceive from your post and understood that, we need to correlate the word to other discipline. education versus sport.

In fact, I solved this by getting vertical ones. Regards,

    3. With the clue being clear. We have to assume the setter is declaring (relevant only because the clue is &Litt)

But then it should be marathis!!

    4. I like Rajinikanth am a Non-Resident Marathi (hence almost). Like Thanjavur Marathi, even Kannadiga Marathi (save Belgaum) a regular marathi speakers wouldn't understand or even identify as Marathi.

Poli and Sambhar in Tamil Nadu are Marathi contribution. How people migrated over centuries across the world creating new dialects and cultural variants is absolutely fascinating.

      Vinit Dev Wankhede

That is my name...acronymised as Vidwan.
