  37. ROMANCE AFTER A GAP
Calina VOLGA, was a forty plus single woman. Born in THE FAR EAST of Siberia, her family migrated to the States when she was around 10. A Historian by profession, she was currently researching on the EOLITHS found in Greece. Her research partner was Bill Hayden, an archaeologist, who had repeatedly professed his romantic interest in her.

Calina, somehow, felt that her Russian roots prevented her from aligning with an OCCIDENTAL mate. Though her wardrobe of EVENING DRESSES, reflected the FINESSE of her acquired taste, her heart was still Russian preferring her land's elaborate operas & SILENT ERA movies to Hollywood's OVER DUBBED Glitz. More over, she still belonged to the Russian Orthodox Church, while Bill was a true blue PROTESTANT.

Living in a beautiful semi detached house, complete with a barn, AS OF LATE, she had been wanting to do some MODIFICATIONS to her Interiors. Her VANE required replacement, she needed a new STEP STOOL & she wanted to give her Porch a RETRO look. Bill had suggested a carpenter he knew, adding in jest that he was a Russian, who seemed to have difficulty in understanding the American accent.

Waiting for the carpenter to arrive, she snacked on some EDIBLE SEEDS while practising her out of use native tongue. She RESPONDED to the first ring of the bell & actually wondered at the TINGLING in her heart. Was she so excited to meet a fellow country man?

On opening the door, she found a tall middle aged man, carrying a Carpenter's tool kit complete with an ADZE. He introduced himself as Vladimir CABOT & the name seemed to ring a bell. As she put her hand out & saw his hand, she was stunned.

`Vlad! Is that really you?' her voice refused to come out. He looked equally stunned. Her mind raced back to one of her last images of leaving home. Saying Good Bye to her BOSOM BUDDY on the ADIT leading to the salt mine in their home town. Both their faces streaked with tears, they knew they might never meet again.

How could she not recognise the stubbed little finger, broken irreparably, as her friend had saved her, when she fell from a tree, all of 8 years old? The agonising pain that he endured & the humiliation amongst the boys as they ribbed him for his 4 finger right hand.

And here he was, all grown up & greying at the temples. With her spirits BUOYING up, she jumped & hugged him tight. She did not want to let go at all. Gently disengaging himself Vlad PEDALLED back by almost a yard. Well aware of the difference in their current status, he did not DEEM IT FIT, that they should behave like old buddies.

Ms. Volga! Can we discuss the repairs you want?' he asked in a gruff voice. Taken aback, she composed herself & called him in. He told her about his tough life back home, his migration to America just 3 years back & last but not the least, his single status.

A daytime carpenter, he supplemented his income by operating a PILE DRIVER at night. When he tried to explain, why their friendship could never be revived, her Russian temper flared & she SPAT out - 'I CONCUR with all you say. But I am no longer the same RUNT, who you said Goodbye to, 30 years back. I am a woman who knows her mind. I know what I have waited for. Not even you can dissuade me now. Let us take one day at a time. But don't deny me my happiness. My friendship.' So saying, she TENONed into him.

A man is yet to be born, who can deny a beautiful woman, her heart's desire - especially when it is well within her reach.

Suffice to say, in less than 3 months Ms. Volga became Mrs. Volga CABOT & no UMBRA could cloud the radiant rainbow of her remaining life.
