The X represents a kiss, while the O represents a hug. This is most likely because the X is a stylized way of showing two mouths kissing, and the O looks like two pairs of arms connecting for a hug

    3. Well, I tried to phrase that one exactly as someone like me (someone who works with computer programs) would say it. I agree it defies cryptic crossword styles. And we have crawlers also in our domain, they can be helpful or harmful in a deadly way.

    4. But then, a crawler would run computer programs, not languages, on the hardware.

  37. 15a. Ordered was the homophone indicator, as in when one orders food by telling the waiter. In case it is not a good way to clue, do tell me.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. "Homophone indicators: These words give a sense of something being listened to or said aloud. They can include words such as on the air, broadcast, I hear, said, declared, audibly, outspoken, reportedly, sounds like and vocal."

      Operative word:
being listened to. (Something said aloud would be listened to).

Ordered here need to be understood as a verbal order.
And even so it is so definitive that it implies that what is said is understood correctly and implemented.

No scope for ambiguous understanding which is a requirement for hp indicator.

    2. Hi Sree Sree,

Doesn't the waiter get it wrong quite often? At least it happens to me a lot.

I do see the point that ordered is not used as a homophone indicator in cryptic crosswords, there are plenty of terms used commonly, as you have listed.

      Delete
    3. A pro waiter always repeats and confirms what he heard!
Some NY restuarants taught me that "customer is expected to ask the waiter to repeat and confirm. Thats part of ordering process"

      WHAT DOES XOX MEAN?

XOX, or XOXO, means hugs and kisses, with the x representing kisses and the o representing hugs. It’s usually used as a lighthearted way of expressing affection, sincerity, or deep friendship.

      Delete
  41. Maybe, to be more precise, the clue should have been "Say, hugs and kisses within . . . "

X is hugs showing crossed arms
O is kiss - showing a puckered mouth.

    3. My understanding is a hug is when our hands go around another person. - O
Kiss is crossing of lips. Also when the word is reduced to a single letter, it becomes X.

  42. All in all, precision is what is needed in cryptic CW and not doubts and guesses.
Also, Computer wizards (as I would like to call them) assume what they know is known to everybody- not necessarily.
