    5. Put is present
      A mate is a friend
A mate without put is A M( PUT) ATE

    6. Here we are adding PUT, so how is the clue "without present"?

      Delete
    7. Opposite of within. Put within mate or mate without put. Cryptic.
A friend (Mate) without Present (Put)
Earlier,I had a taken a long time to understand this.

    11. Without, is opposite of within and hence means outside. This meaning is available in dictionaries but are mentioned to be archaic. This is widely used in crosswords.
The other without is the opposite of with.
