TalePiece
By Dr RKE
Roy Williams had lived all his life in the comforts of CALIF. He had taken up a new job in which he had to LIAISE between various American NGOs and African nations below the poverty line. He tried to get his work done mostly by phone and mail but flying in person to those nations was sometimes needed. He was prone to getting severe OTALGIA during flights and so he hated flying. This time, he had been forced by an INFLUENTIAL NGO to go to Kinshasa for a personal meeting with the Health Minister of The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). They were to discuss how best to distribute the new oral CHOLERA vaccine to the PASTORAL communities living on the upper reaches of the Congo River. Apparently, the OBSTACLES were many - maintaining a cold chain till the last mile, making sure that the local AGENT does not make a quick buck by selling the free vaccine for some CDF (the Congolese Franc) and so on.
He had just dozed off in the flight after a ‘DELICIOUS” airline meal and a sweet POTION of wine. He was dreaming of the DAYLILIES that grew on a pot in his office, when he was woken up by the abrupt chatter. He rubbed his eyes and squinted at the SMALL SCREEN on the back of the seat ahead. CNN had just broken the news about the escalation of CONFLICT in DRC. The security guards (kadagos) who had been trained personally by the President of Congo from their childhood to be loyal soldiers had BETRAYed him, turned ASSASSINS and had SHOT at the President. He was supposedly critical, who knows, maybe even dead.
So, it was with rising fear that Roy Williams landed at Kinshasa. His instinct was to take the first flight back home from the airport itself, but most outgoing flights had been cancelled. ODDLY, a RENT-A-CAR service was still working and he did the sanest thing to do - drive to the American Embassy instead of his hotel. He thought that would be a safe haven but just he was standing at the gate of the Embassy, waiting among a hundred others, there was a bomb blast a few metres away. Roy Williams was knocked off his feet and he has AMNESIA for the events of the next day. He does not still remember the BEDROLL he had to share with a fellow American or how they had to PASS THE HAT AROUND to collect money for buying their food.
The health minister usurped the Presidency in the turmoil and he DEIGNed to release some of those holed up in the Embassy. The only name familiar to the minister was Roy Williams’ and so our man was first on the list of evacuees. He jumped up from joy like a madman until the US Consul General chastised him saying, “Williams, will you please ACT YOUR AGE”? After this traumatic experience, Roy Williams, quit his job and has become a consultant for ABACUS international, an education start-up that does not require such dangerous travel.
Sorry. I forgot to hit the publish button
ReplyDeleteI diligently waited since 8.30. Thank u Col.
DeleteI was worried buttload. Sent you a message. This is what aging does. Fear
DeleteI was also worried than vexed. Col is so punctual.
DeleteI too was wondering why my crossword was not showing up in the blog on time! But decided to give some more time.
DeleteBLACK & WHITE ROMANCE
ReplyDeleteSusan was an English TRAINER, in NIGERIA, who trained exchange students leaving for the US in English. Today, she herself, was on her maiden visit to the US. Flying OUT OF TOWN, from Ibadan, she had arrived at Abuja, only today morning to board the straight flight to New York.
As soon as she was seated, she took out the day's paper from her handbag & folded it across the Crossword page. She loved doing The Guardian puzzle daily. Thank God! the global edition of the paper had been LAUNCHED in her town, a few years back. Being a pen & paper solver, she could not adjust to the interactive digital version.
The plane had barely taxied around the APRON & already she had filled most of the TRANSVERSE squares. So engrossed was she, that SO FAR, she had barely ACCORDED a glance to her neighbour - fair, blue eyed Brian Greer.
Brian had been keenly watching her & found her coffee coloured smooth skin, curly mop of hair & twinkling eyes behind her glasses ADORABLE. As the plane took off, her pen slipped from her hand & fell between their seats. Seeing her crest fallen face, he quickly bent down & RECOVERED it for her. Her dimpled smile & demure Thank You made his day.
It OCCURRED to him that this journey was going to be special & ENLIVENED by his attractive neighbour. TAKING the initiative, he tried to introduce himself. Though AFFABLE by nature, Susan was intent on completing the puzzle & so answered him in monosyllables only. Well! Going by her speed, she should complete soon. He decided to wait it out. After all it was a 11 hour straight journey from Abuja to New York.
Soon she was done. Now she looked at him & smiled apologetically. In JEST, she commented - Sorry! You might have found that strange. Not really - he said. I am not exactly, the HOI POLLOI, when it comes to Word Puzzles. Are you too a solver? she asked him eagerly. All her life, she had waited for an ALIKE mind, one person who didn't find her passion for the Black & White squares BIZARRE!
Soon they got talking. She learnt, he was a KING PIN in Investment Banking, an accounting ALCHEMIST, who visited Abuja regularly. She told him, she was going to New York to participate in the Final Round of an International Crossword Competition. She was from a moderate background & it was the BENEFACTORS from her church, who had sponsored her ticket.
Soon she was telling him about the different types of puzzles, different styles of setters, how she wanted to graduate from being just a solver to a SETTER one day. He, however, laughed & said - The only SETTER he knew was his GREAT DANE.
In no time, the journey was over. On alighting - he wished her Best of Luck, to OUTRANK all other Competitors & not let anyone else SNARE the final victory from her. She didn't know what he meant, when he said, a surprise was waiting for her at the venue. Before she could ask him, he was gone, with long strides, lost in the ROOD of TORSI around. She realised they had exchanged just names. No Addresses or Mobile numbers!
She hailed a cab & reached her hotel. The next day passed in a flurry. To her credit, she was placed 3rd from the top. She was so happy to meet so many cruciverbalists under one roof. She was surprised that, she constantly thought of Brian, even amidst all this excitement.
In the evening, a special get together had been arranged, where many International SETTERS were going to be present. Imagine her surprise, when, walking in, the first person she saw was Brian. Her surprise was doubled, when she found out he is BRENDAN, one of her favourite setters. At the end of a lovely evening, they parted with each others' numbers safely encoded in their brains.
In a year's time, the budding Romance between them culminated in their wedding.
The Guardian wrote in its article - No shades of Gray for this match made across Grids - It was love of Black & White that sparked this love between Black & White - referring to their lineage & colour.
Eager to know what hapens to the junior Greer, born to a setter and a solver!!ππππ
DeleteYou will have to wait for the next episode! (as CGB is likely to say) Or you can take over and complete the story!
Delete@RKE - Doc! This was supposed to be a train romance between u & a setter. But
Delete1. U have switched to mobile solving. Inimel unga pechu ka - as children would say.
2. U probably met ur romantic match lo.....ng long ago.
So.....
36 summers ago!
DeleteIt wasn't the most politically correct thing to say, but then, as you will agree, The Guardian has always been more famous for its Crosswords than subtle elegant reporting!!
ReplyDeleteIt = hint oddly or evenly?
ReplyDeleteThanks Ajeesh
DeleteSelect oddly can also mean taking the alternate letters
DeleteHappy to see you Ajeesh cracking it. I took oddly in the same way as Col said. Gridman once clarified as such long time back.
DeleteCol. is always so prompt that (as Shrikanth said) one tends to get worried. Of course,I thought of this- forgot hit publish- since it has happened once before. If I remember right,it was a Sunday.
ReplyDeleteNot able to understand 23D- Shot.
ReplyDeleteLetters SHOT comes before letters TIPU
DeletePrevious letters of alphabet
Delete15 D
ReplyDeleteAnswer : ASSASSINS ( hired guns
Sins, violent activities
As , as with s for senator :ASSAS
Annotation not exactly correct.
DeleteAs per your explanation above the answer will be {AS}{AS}{S}{SINS}
Senator intervenes means S in between AS & AS, AS S AS = ASSAS
DeleteAs, when = AS, senator, S, intervenes
ReplyDeleteAS S AS = ASSAS
Well done, Sarathi
DeleteGreat,Dr.RKE! You are excelling yourself.
ReplyDeleteππ
Delete+1 Dr. RKE.
DeleteI expected you will write on diseases [as there are some in my puzzle today]. But you have masterly incorporated them to suit your line of story. Hats off!!!
Now I was for Ms. Gowri's story.
Please read 'WAIT" for 'was'
Deleteπ I am also waiting to see Gowri's spin
ReplyDeleteWas easy to solve. Agent was my favourite
ReplyDeleteNot in favour redundant words like
9A - On the
11A - Rules
22A - At
7D - Is
15D - Are committed by
20D - Of
3D = T is "at at last" not just at last IMO
Some surfaces could be improved as well. For example 13A
With regards to Unches(or unchecked letters), I thought the rule was there shouldn't be 3 consecutive unches.
ReplyDeleteThere should be no unches Vasant
DeleteIf u dont mind - can u explain what this is? Thanx.

ReplyDeleteThe Col's blog we eagerly await.
Today he forgot to press the publish button,
Which made many of us press the panic button.
To our relief, it appeared at nine-though late!
The blog is interesting as ever
DeleteIt is ofcourse a question of better late than never
For once Colonel's punctuality proved to be his curse
As his fellow bloggers panicked - proving their bond with him is for better or for worse.
All is well that ends well
DeleteGlad to know Colonel is as always swell
Needless was this pell mell
All caused by each one of our anxious spell.

DeleteYes, sometimes, punctuality can be a curse;
DeleteWhen the usual event misses the date,
Our minds tend to imagine the worst,
Causing our minds to needlessly agitate.
Topical!
ReplyDeleteExcellent one Karoake! Most of it fell quickly but got stuck with 2D, 23D and small screen. Very Innovative clues.
ReplyDeleteNice tales both.
23D SHOT is such an innovative clue, I daresay, no one would have scripted so far in any xword, full marks to the setter!
