TalePiece
By Dr RKE
In today’s NARRATIVE, I am going to DESCRIBE some ASPECTs of the events that happened 270 years back at the Rock Fort, in what was then known as Trichinopoly. This place, which is a stone’s throw from my residence, is steeped in history. In 1749, in the Battle of Ambur, Nawab Anwaruddin Khan of Arcot fell to the superior French forces of Dupleix. Before dying he told his son, crown prince Muhammed Khan Walajah, “BETA, you have to avenge my death and teach a lesson to that BANDIT, Chanda Sahib. He has a TENDENCY to align with the French. You go south, RAISE an army with British help. You will also BENEFIT from the enmity between Chanda sahib and the Marathas of Tanjore”. The dying Nawab also let out a DIATRIBE against Hyder Ali, who had sided with the French, but the young Muhammed Khan didn’t stay to hear it. He had to flee before he could be put in PRISON by Chanda Sahib.
Muhammed Khan Walajah took refuge WITHIN the fort at Trichinopoly. Chanda’s informers TRACEd Muhammed’s hideout and with the EXTRA reinforcement from the French, Chanda soon laid a SIEGE at the Rock Fort. The walls of the Rock Fort were impregnable and Khan with a small British troop managed to keep bringing in supplies secretly through the Cauvery River that skirts the fort. The supplies were supposedly pushed up the GRADIENT of the river stashed under the corpses being brought to the cremation ground between the river and the fort. The STALEMATE continued for a whole year.
A new DIMENSION was added when Stringer Lawrence took over the forces of the East India Company in 1751. He sent Robert Clive to break the siege of Trichinopoly. Instead of proceeding to Trichinopoly, the brilliant strategist Clive instead first sent a tiny troop to occupy Arcot, as it had been left undefended by Chanda Saheb. Chanda Sahib, unable to DIGEST losing his capital, was forced to detach 4000 of his siege troops at Trichinopoly and he proceeded to reclaim Arcot. The depleted siege troop, under the command of the dithering French General Law, went HAYWIRE on being assaulted by Lawrence and Clive, one on each flank. In two days of fierce battle in April of 1752, the siege was broken and Clive entered the fort victoriously. Law and Chanda’s forces fled to the island of Srirangam, taking refuge in the massive Tiruvanaikoil temple, as strong as a fortress. This occupation of a Hindu temple by the French and Muslims, provoked the Marathas of Tanjore, who, aided by the British, negotiated a treaty of surrender from Chanda Sahib. With Arcot and Trichy gone from his hold, the SORE LOSER Chanda Sahib was a dejected man. He was beheaded 2 months later by the Marathas, who violated the terms of surrender.
Thus, the RACE between the French and the English for supremacy in the South was decisively won by Clive. Clive’s METEORic rise continued for two decades but this TITAN of a general was finally impeached for his avaricious gain of personal wealth in India and died by slitting his jugular with a penknife in 1774.
ROLE OF A LIFE TIME!!
ReplyDeleteWhen Netflix announced their plan to produce an Indian version of 'Silence of the Lambs', Neha knew she wanted to be part of it. It was her favourite movie, so much so that, the movie's SIGNATURE TUNE, was her permanent ring tone. She felt she possessed all the REQUISITES to play Clarice Starling.
Neha was a FLEDGLING actress, waiting for that one stellar role, that would make the audience throw their HANDS UP in universal admiration. Because her late father, had been a renowned director, Cinema & Acting was INGRAINED in her.
With her meager contacts, she regularly managed to SIT IN ON important script readings. But somehow the main roles always proved to be slippery EELS. She constantly CHAFED AT THE BIT, that finally only supporting roles were offered to her. It was COLD COMFORT, that last year, she had won the National Award for Best Supporting Actress.
With the help of her agent, she managed to gain an interview with the TOFFEE NOSED Director. Inside a NISSEN HUT, which was erected as part of his current sets, he offered her a screen test. She was to portray a G MAN, complete with the Men in Black attire. But when she TRIED ON the costume, she found it two sizes too big for her. She quickly called her husband Nitin and asked him to bring the black blazer & tie OWNED by her late father.
Dressed in her father's clothes & armed with her new found confidence, she felt ready to take on the THORNIEST of situations. And difficult it was. Under make shift NEON LIGHTS, with OGRES leering at her, she felt like a NAFF. But not wanting to LOSE any GROUND, she gave it her all & hoped for the best.
Within MOMENTS of reaching home, she got her call. She was selected. Next day, when she read in the papers that the current Super Star KK was to play Hannibal, she thought she had really TRIUMPHED. Nitin & she even had a mini celebration with CAPELIN & MARTINI.
Soon the formal Workshops started. Imagine her shock, when she found that KK was an utter SPOIL SPORT. Not only had he not watched the original movie, he wanted to change the script to suit his image.
He wanted Hannibal to be much younger, remove the Cannibal part completely & even have a romantic duet between himself & Neha. When she objected vehemently, he laughed - saying - It is just a CONTE. We can take liberties with it.
After trying to desperately to convince the director, she decided it was best to EXPUNGE herself from the movie, rather than be part of such UDDER (utter) rubbish.
The next few days, Nitin tried his best to cheer her up, but her mood refused to lift up. So imagine his surprise, when one week later, he came home, to find her all chirpy & smiling. "Good News!!!" she declared. "What??? You got your role back?" "No. This is even better. I am going to be a Mom!" "Oh!!! Does Clarice have a Mom? Aren't you a bit young for the role?"
She laughed aloud. "I am going to be a Mom. Of our baby!!! My tests have come out positive & tomorrow we are going for the AMNIO!!! And Yes! No more MARTINIs for me. Only milk - straight from the UDDER!!"
Needless to say, they were one happy couple, their joy multiplying four fold when Netflix rejected the script & scrapped the project altogether

ReplyDeleteDeep felt condolence on behalf of all of us at the tragic copter crash and the untimely passing away of a great General. He seems to be qualified on many counts, with degrees from various institutions, from India & abroad. May their souls rest in peace and encourage his replacement to continue the good work.
ReplyDeleteReal tragedy. My boss & i had the good fortune of meeting him once in person & shaking hands with him. They don't make them like that anymore.

ReplyDeleteDr. RKE,
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed your Tale Piece. I am comparatively in the dark about this period in TN history, namely that of East India co. and Clive. I had read a bit and enjoyed about the Chola period history of Uraaiyur and Chirarpally(Sri was added later on) It was the golden period of the region under Rajaraja & Rajendra Chozhas.
🙏🙏
ReplyDeleteDoc - That was really informative. You sure are a treasure trove. 👍
