Mary Fernandes is a math teacher in St.Jude’s Girls High School, Mangalore. She has just finished writing a graph on the CHALKBOARD, about the ANALYSIS of POLYNOMIAL functions for her class of 12th standard girls. As she puts down the chalk piece, the pain in her wrist becomes intense. Years of writing has caused a painful GANGLION to appear there. She is wondering if she could get it operated upon when the school is closed for the YULE SEASON. No, that wouldn’t be easy with her 7 year old boy, Georgie, eagerly awaiting for GIFTS from ST.NICK. She has to SPRUCE up the house, hang the STAR outside the house, make the EGG ROLLS, EGGNOG (of course, without the SPIRITs) and bake the plum cake. He had asked for PUMPKIN PIE for Thanksgiving, but she was busy at school and had not made it then. “I must make up for it at least now”, she thinks, “how I wish my Martin was around to take care of Georgie”. Even Mary’s father IMPUGNs her capacity as a good mother, because she is always busy with her work at school and the private tuitions she gives. She remembers what the priest had said to his FLOCK at Sunday Mass “And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart” (Luke2:51).  I can only do that….

Her husband Martin is at an off-shore oil rig in UAE and he can make it to India only in May next year. She goes home, envying her colleagues who have their husbands with them. As she enters her house, Georgie comes running to her excitedly and says “Mommy, see what Santa brought for me. I swear he came on a SLED drawn by REINDEERs”.  “Oh, my poor Georgie, he must be imagining things”

But there is an unopened gift box wrapped in GLOSSY paper on the table. The card on it simply says “With Love from St.Nick. To be opened only past midnight on Christmas Eve”. “This must be from my Dad. It can’t be from Martin- he has never acted on the SPUR of the moment like this in the last 8 years” Mary thinks.

Afte putting Georgie to bed that night, Mary unwraps the box carefully, so she could repack it and leave it for Georgie to be surprised the next morning. It is her turn to be surprised as she uses an OPENER to open a box of what looks like cookies. She finds a KEEPSAKE item, a gold bracelet with BIS MARK in it, neatly packed in a jewel box! “How on earth did Dad find money for this?”

She is startled by a voice from behind her “Like it, honey?” Let us leave Martin and Mary as they hug wildly, enjoying being together after so long.  After all doesn’t the Bible say ‘Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away’ (Song of Solomon 8:7) MERRY CHRISTMAS

  1. A COVID CHRISTMAS
Covid had been with us for almost a year now. Practising total quarantine, for most of this time, my mother was at her wits ends, with the STRESS of looking after 3 kids all by herself. Although she was quite a PARAGON, it was my Dad whom all 3 of us WORSHIPPED. Unfortunately he had been caught across the Atlantic, on work, when suddenly the borders were sealed. His presence, in our lives was reduced to daily calls. Due to BANDWIDTH problems in our suburb, even video calls were a luxury.

Now Christmas was here & we realised it would be a lonely affair with no extended family or friends & most important - no Dad. I was the eldest & all of 12 - old enough to understand that it was Daddy who was our secret Santa. But my younger sister & brother were NONE THE WISER & still believed in the Saint Nick

I voiced my OPINION to my Mom, that we must celebrate Christmas with as much joy & tradition as we possibly could. Reluctantly she agreed. After carefully TOTTING UP our savings, we made a list of items for online shopping. The tree we could afford, was quite small. But I spruced it up with our hand made ornaments. Fetching the lights from the loft in the garage, we strung them all over the house & the roof tops, by using the GANTRY.

INSPIRED by me, my Mom joined & we carefully wrapped the gifts, after the children were asleep & hid them from sight. I helped Mom bake our traditional cake & do the prep work for the Christmas feast.

Since the 3 of us were part of the Church choir, on the night of 24th, we dressed up & decided to perform. Dad joined through video call. We TRILLED IN UNISON, our favourite carols, one after the other & finished with our Church Father's favourite ANTHEM. The HIGH POINT was the Mass read out by my Dad. Midnight was a couple of hours away & we missed the hustle & BUSTLE of our regular Mass. But still, there was a lot of warmth & love in our parlour that day.

Wishing my Dad a final Good Night, Mom prepared the kids for bed. They were on PINS & NEEDLES, with hundreds of questions about how & when Santa would come. My sister actually, placed a bottle of sanitiser & 3 masks near the tree, for Santa!

As I was about to enter my slumber land, there was a clatter of noise in our front lawn. I rushed to open the door & there he was - in his red suit & white beard, with twinkling eyes & an N95 mask. As I stepped back to maintain social distance - I blurted - Where is your ARTILLERY? Your reindeers, sleigh & sack full of gifts?

Santa woefully replied - since vaccines had not been sanctioned for reindeers yet, 4 of his reindeers - Dasher, Dancer, Prancer & Vixen were in quarantine while Donner & Blitzen were in ICU, though the Doctors had assured him they will pull through. Rudolph with his shiny red nose, was shunned everywhere, since people thought he was infected.

  2. His while collar elves were working from home, but their production rate had really slowed down. Santa had repaired his old sleigh & requested his friend, a WAPITI, to pull it for him. But since RTPCR was a must to cross every border, he too had decided to rely on E Commerce outlets to dispatch his gifts.

He had decided to visit me in person - because he thought I deserved a special gift for ENABLING my family to have a cheerful Christmas, even amidst these tough times. So saying, he UNHITCHED his sleigh & from the bottom, pulled out my surprise gift. His face became WRIER, seeing I wanted to sanitise the gift!

I couldn't wait till morning & opened the packet. Starlights & rainbows streamed out & made a HIGH JUMP FOR the sky. Some letters also spilled out & like a crossword, they took their places after twirling & dancing around. Aha!!! The sky sparkled with the answer! Always Have Hope!!!

What a RARITY!!! This is called Christmas Magic - said Santa. This quarantine is just an EXIGENCY, we have to undergo, to conquer the epidemic!! Believe me & have faith! This too shall pass.

So saying, he hitched his sleigh to the WAPITI, jumped into it & making a U TURN, flew up into the sky, as though a TREBUCHET had been launched UPSTREAM & vanished over the roof tops!!!

I woke half up & realised from slumber land, I had moved to dream land & was soon in La La Land, in a world where Covid was gone, life was normal & most important, my Dad was there to hug & kiss in person.

On that note - A Merry Christmas to all of you.
Always have Hope in your heart,
    no matter what;
    This too shall pass,
& the world will be the way it was !!!
