  2. 16 down - That’s what a couple undergoes when split! (7) - DIVORCE [E]

Although it can be regarded as a life sentence one would undergo, divorce is what a couple gets.

    IS up - SI
    For instance - EG
    Group of workers - BEE(S)

Only the missing plural is the problem.

  6. Am back after a blissful break away from civilisation and internet :)

Have fun with the European leader, is the one out to perhaps join the party at last (5)

    My take - E{NJO(-i)}*Y
One (i) out of join, with perhaps being the anagrind

  7. 24a: I think maddy has nailed it, but how is "one out TO perhaps join" = "one out OF perhaps join"?

  8. Shuchi, que sera sera. When will you learn not to ask such questions in a NJ xwd :). These xwds are from a parallel universe, the grammatic nuances of which we mortals cannot be presumptuous enough to comprehend or master. For it is our lot to only wonder and marvel [sic]....

  9. 9 - Sensation of a light mattress let out half dry (6)

    My version ...TICK LE(-t)
    Sensation - Defn
    Light mattress - TICK
    let - Deletion fodder
    out - deletion indicator
half dry = t , it is an abbn used in xwds, I don't know why...maybe coz dry = tt ( teetotaller),
    => t out of let

  10. maddy, What to do, not stoic enough yet to wonder and marvel :)

I also feel that unless it's highlighted that the annotation has a problem, new solvers might get the impression that the clue was OK.

It does mean a lot more typing where NJ is concerned :) Maybe that's why I have given up on solving NJ, and only visit Col's blog to read what's going on.

    Is ATH = from gATHering?

  12. Hi all,

Back in Bangalore after an exhilarating drive from Coimbatore to Bangalore, left at 9:30AM and was home by 5:30 PM after three half hour halts enroute. The roadwork is almost complete and managed to touch 130K's on most of the stretches.

Glad to see that I had left sufficient fodder to keep the comments going, not that it is required in an NJ CW.

I really thought NJ was vain enough to include herself in 24D

  13. Have fun with the European leader, is the one out to perhaps join the party at last (5)

I think the compiler's intended anno is E(NJO)Y

    E from European leader
    Y from party at last
NJO - removing I from JOIN and anagrammatising it

  15. Lucky you, Colonel.

When I once drove with some others from Coimbatore back home a few years ago, it was a lovely drive in the middle of the night from Coimbatore to Mysore via Satyamangalam forests - notwithstanding that it was that time a Veerappan territory, and he was still ruling the roost - to Chamarajanagar to Nanjangud.

I don't know which route you took to Bangalore. It will be a pleasure to know.

  16. Colonel,

1DN - Where does the second S from ABSCIS come from?
8DN - Without french character -> FRU. Is U for character or FRU for french character?
26DN - The answer is TAUT and the anno is {TA}{UT}. UT for "note" and TA for "Thank you". Not sure how TA is related to "Thank you"

  17. Just found that TA is British slang for "Thank you"

  18. Hi Richard,
I came back via Salem. The route via Satyamangalam forests, though an NH now upto Bangalore, has some very bad patches after Chamrajnagar, though the route is shorter by almost 50 KM's
