  1. Nice clues: 1 ac, 28 ac, 3 d, 16 d

    Had difficulty with the top right-hand corner. Having put down 9d as 'give me another', got stuck there.

    7 d: BELLE is a noun for a girl. How can it be an adjective like 'attractive'?

    8 d: I could not get this either.

    19 d: STOMACH was my guess too. Same case with 26 d. Any annos please?

    I think it is CAT BOAT.
    Tom = cat
    Jolly is a kind of boat
    CATBOAT is a sailing boat with only one mast, which is indicated by the second segment of the clue.

    Belle is beautiful in french and is used for attractive or beutiful girl in English

  4. 26 - One rightly ridiculed hoop-la, for instance (4,4) - FA{I}{R} {GAME} ?
    It's a DD.

    One rightly ridiculed = fair game e.g. For cartoonists and stand-up comedians, politicians are fair game.
    hoop-la, for instance = a game found in a fair (mela)

  5. Two guesses for 8d. Neither fits the clue perfectly but with MM one can never be sure!

    EYESORES (notices = EYES, and kinds of poison may be an oblique defn for things offensive to the eye)
    or
    ACETONES (failed anagram attempt of the letters of NOTICES, with "new" as anagrind)

  6. 7 - Attractive call for the English (5) - {BELL}{E}

    Agree with Richard. Belle is a noun, "attractive" (adj.) isn't a grammatically right definition.

  7. Thanks Maddy & Shuchi,
    Since 5A is CATBOAT it looks like ACETONES is the correct answer

  8. It could be ANEMONES as well which is equally unjustifiable!!
