  1. Good morning folks

Got stuck at 1A (thought of SPIRIT PRAYING), 28A (something like TOSSED HERRING?), 3D (R?T) abd 6D (??E?N).

MERITED, THEATRE, SHOVEL, IRONICAL, ENTER, INMATES, VATICAN (good one), ISSUE, AGRARIAN, LESSEE (clue setting not OK), DRIVING, OUTCAST, PURPORT, TIDE, RETIREMENT, NOTICES, MISS ENGLAND (liked this), EGRET etc. were all good.

  2. DISCHARGED, TRIPE, VERTIGO, SUSTAIN, DOPE and TAR were left out of my list.

  3. DISCHARGED, PU<-R-PORT, VAT-I-CAN, (-r)EGRET, SHOVE-L, AGRA-R-AIN were nice. What price Miss Scotland et al, if MISS ENGLAND is the (and not a) beauty of Britain.

Missed on THEGN. Like Richard, thought of TOSSED HERRING, but could not find it in Google, then thought of SOUSED, and found that indeed there was such a thing.

Re your praise for the clue to a longer entry in the grid...
Over the years I have found that this composer's clues for long or perimeter words/phrases are very good while those for shorter ones (e.g., LESSEE, as you have rightly pointed out) go abegging wrt def, part of speech, grammar or usage.
    See, for instance, my post:

It seems that the hand that makes the tyger! tyger! burning bright/ In the forests of the night also makes the lamb.

  5. THEGN is an older form of THANE - which will immediately be recognised and understood by readers of Will's Macbeth.

I too TOSSED the HERRING around for a while, till Mr Google helped me out, luckily it was not a RED one.

  10. Never liked Biology. So Soused Herring posed no problem. Once I found Herring as the second word I opened the Herring page on Wiki and got my answer.

  17. Do read the second item here.

About use of pseudonyms for The Guardian cryptic but not for the 'quick' crossword.

    Very revealing!

  18. Hi
Out early today, hence fitted in here. After yesterday’s Vatican, today Jerusalem in clue 1a with an answer of M(IS-SION)ARY, along with TESTAMENT is sure Manna from the sky. I ADMIT it is hard to SWALLOW an INSIPID ROAST, but is it ACADEMIC to be AGITATEd about ERRONEOUS inclusion of MOSS and SCARABS in a PLATE GLASS MEMENTO, CONTINGENT upon a TOSS ? IBSEN (Nesbit(–t) <-) was great. NEW POTATO, TAN-GENT, IDLES, ROAST, AU-DI-O, ADMIT were nice.
