  4. Hi

All the best for Onam, also for Rigupakarma.
    Sam Browne gets replaced today.

SOCIAL DEMOCRACY and FEMALE OFFSPRING, both DEEP issues (pun intended). RELIGIOUS ORDER was ok.

Could not get 2d. I put BEEF as a person of physical substance, with a lot of matter can be considered BEEFY.

I wondered too: What’s paper doing in 7d? I thought paper could be A as sizes of paper are determined in relation to A: A2, A4 etc., A being 4 times of A4.But there is an 'a' with the Greek island which we need to discount in such a case.

  5. Kishore,

    Make paper in a Greek island (6) - {CRE{A}TE}

Paper in has been used for 'add'

A in CRETE to give CREATE (make)

  9. AMIDOSE??? Seems like there's no such word.

    22A was kinda vague.

"Spy does not bother to celebrate" to mean CELEBRATE - RAT is a bit twisted. But quite imaginative.

  10. What's rigupakarma? Is it a Kannada thing?

  11. Hi everyone and Onam greetings

Had about 80% success in solving.

    Here is RIG UPAKARMA

Same view here. AMIDOSE by itself does not exist. But AMIDOSE SALINE does exist as, it is the solution in which contact lenses are stored.

  13. 'upakarma' is the term denoting Avani Avittam when you change the sacred thread.
'Rigupakrama' because those who follow the Rig veda observe it today.
I think that those who follow the Yajur veda observe the ritual tomorrow.
'upa' means 'beginning', 'karma' is 'duty'. So it's a ritual from the most ancient times? Sorry, I am not well-versed in Sanskrit.

  14. Deepak, I was wondering 'cause I couldn't find the word in any of the online dictionaries. Thanks for clarifying....

I'm still not able to make any sense of the clue.

  15. Thanks Richard and Chaturvasi...

I didn't know that it could also be called "upakarma." And I thought all people celebrate Avani Avattam on the same day.

  16. Maybe it is called the 'beginning duty' because it is usually done at the beginning of a yajna/homam.

Deepak, nice picture at top. It was not visible when I first accessed the blog today.

  17. I understand that "upa" means additional. Upakarma is an additional duty that a Brahman would have to perform as a ritual, like changing his sacred thread once in a year. There's "nityakarma," which refers to sandhyavana and Brahmans perform this ritual 3 times a day (nitya meaning regular/ daily etc)
