  1. Hi all

Have an eerie feeling that I may have completed the puzzle. I am omitting doubtful ones. The bottom part is all guesswork.

VIOLENCE, MEDICO, NEGLECTED, TIMOR, NOSHER, CLAPTRAP, UTILITIES, ANTELOPE (liked this), RIPPLE, ASSAULTED, GRANGE(?), EVENING (a wee-bit too early for night), CONGEST, SCOTS, TEST, SIMMERS, CORRUPT, ELEMENTAL, ADULATE, PLENITUDE, SLIPWAY(?) and others were fine.

SCOT appears twice in SCOTS and ASCOT.
    26D - SAGE - flawed setting.

  2. Hi
When EVEN-IN-G is night and VIO(LEN)CE* is passion, how much can you nest NOSHERs ? I mean if we snack between Noshers, would you still call it a nosher or something else ? Rather CO-RR-UP-T ELEMENTAL* CLAPTRAP for CON-GEST(-a)-ing a ME-DIC-O’s brain... Looking for aspirin...before the ANT ELOPEs wIth the SAGE.

  3. I took 4D as TEST, which fits in all right. MEET appears correct. Lucky with all the rest of the guesses.

  4. Excitement=verve ?

  5. Richard,
    You liked ANTELOPE? Why?
26D appears okay to me, as compared to the gaffes that NJ normally makes.

  6. Richard, I also put in TEST, as in 'see' if the salt in the dish is ok, test it and a 'test' match

  7. And not very happy about 21d. Are weddings auspicious or are they held at suspiciously auspicous timings? I initially expected MUHURAT or a variant of it.

  8. Deepak, I liked the word formation, not the clue. (Could the setter have 'kid', the young one of antlers etc in mind? Imagination, at any cost!)

  9. Kishore,
I too had MUHURAT initially but didn't put it in and later it did not fit, so settled for WEDDING.

  10. 12a OR from ? I too put in Timor, but not sure of anno for OR

  11. Word formation okay but the definition is flawed.

  12. Deepak, I too did not put it in and was waiting and watching.

  13. NJ seems to have found some link between 'an' and 'or'

  14. Bogey is six over an ostrich. A rare ostrich.

  15. I hope she doesn't get into logical gates, then she would mix up and, n-and, or, n-or and get new items like an, n-an, ord, nord...

  16. Bogey is six over an ostrich. A rare ostrich.
    I didn't get it?

  17. Okay got it as a Bogey is 5 under

  18. Extended play, long play, different RPMs, different times.. Playing at wrong speed just for kicks...
    From 'Allo 'Allo:

Herr Flick: I have an excellent gramophone and many old records of Hitler's speeches. They are quite amusing.
    Helga: Hitler's speeches quite amusing?
Herr Flick: Played at double speed, he sounds like Donald Duck.

  19. An Ostrich is impossible in Golf so it cannot be rare also, it would need a hole-in-one on a par 6

  20. I used rare in the sense of a rare usage. If it does not exist, you are right there are no recorded instances of it as I understand, then the term is extremely rare in usage.

  21. Maybe some day, some one will invent a homing bird which will beat all birdies, eagles, albatrosses, condors and ostriches and will be called a lark, always the first in the hold. Of course, then technology will take the fun out of the game..

  22. Sorry, please read first in the hole, not hold.

  23. Recap on couple of mysteries.

    12A: TIMOR... The elusive OR!!

    22A: Kid and ANTELOPE?

    19D: Excitement and V?

    21D: Auspicious time and wedding?

Of course there were some nice clues. Looks like we have an NJ ver 2.0

  24. V for victory may be a cause for excitement?

  26. Quite annoyingly, the application I use on my phone to solve THC these days has some glitch so I was unable to download and solve this puzzle. I skipped everything pertaining to the clues today as I fully intend to get a printout when the library opens in five hours and solve speedily!

  27. A nice clue in DT CW today:

Central part of two presents where one might be isolated (6,2,7)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Anno:
    Central part - MIDDLE
    of - OF
two presents - NOW + HERE

Defn: where one might be isolated - MIDDLE OF NOWHERE

    ReplyDelete
  29. Nice wordplay but the surface is a bit odd.

    ReplyDelete
  30. A flaw in the above clue is that 'where' in the solution phrase is present in the clue.
