Dr Spock, I had to go through Cheshire town list to complete.
ReplyDelete27A - How is it SEND UP? Can someone explain pls?
ReplyDeleteWhere a clue with its solution is available, some dictionary lookups will help us understand its working.
ReplyDeleteIn days when I didn't have computers/Internet, it was such diligence helped.
To 'send {someone] up' is to 'make fun of [someone]'.
When you post a letter you send it.
'up' means 'at college or at university' as in "My son is up at BITS, Pilani".
David,
ReplyDeleteMake fun of = Definition = SEND UP
post = SEND
at
college = UP (in the UK one goes up to university)
A 'send up' means 'An amusing imitation or parody; a takeoff'
Yerraguntla would have been easier than Ellesmere Port for Everyman in India. Dictionary followed by World Book/Internet is the sequence to solving words like this, Almoner etc.
ReplyDeleteThanks CV Sir, Col. Deepak for the explanation. @CV Sir - Point taken.
