HI, Deepak, your opener was mild and modest, given today's clue-construction.
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of a worker is BREAKER?
ReplyDeleteIts us. Who break our heads in desperation.
Wow! I took a break from THC over the Diwali week, only occasionally checking to see general comments. Am I glad it was NJ week. I finally came back yesterday, solved a handful of clues, but had to leave in a hurry. Got back and read yesterday's blog, and I'm glad I didn't waste too much time on it. I'm going to try maybe a full pass or 2 on today's offering. Let's see how she did today! :)
ReplyDelete7 - Textile dealer will note the speed demon out on road (6) - {ME}{RaCER} A is which road?
ReplyDeleteAs in A1
18 - Finally cuts the small amount of green leaves (7) - {S}{PIN(A)CH} How did the A get into the small amount? Looks like it came from 7D where it got deleted
Are you cross to get a cross word with cross connections !
Apropos Bhavan 833: S&B is Setters/Solvers and Breakers
I have put a separate post about the S&B Meet with a permanent link under the LINKS heading on the Left Hand Side panel.
ReplyDeletePlease put in your comments regarding attendance or otherwise over there
@Bhavan: :D
ReplyDeleteThe only other thing that matches hole for hole in the clues (5)
ReplyDeleteOne more day of torture
ReplyDeleteCol
ReplyDeleteBreaker is a quarry worker who breaks stones. Seems acceptable!
20D also passes muster if we take up to be doing double duty. The second up may be construed as a verb.
ReplyDeleteI thought today's puzzle was funny. Just reading the clues made me LOL. Especially 23A, 1D, 15D, 17D....
ReplyDelete7D A would be short for Avenue.
ReplyDeleteAgree with Shyam on Breaker
ReplyDeleteThis is what he FreeDictionary has to say
ReplyDeletebreak·er 1 (brkr)n.
1. One that breaks, as a machine for breaking up or crushing a substance, such as rock, coal, or plant fibers.
2. A circuit breaker.
3. A wave that crests or breaks into foam, as against a shoreline.
4. One who break dances.
brea·ker 2 (brkr)
n. Nautical
A small water cask, often used in lifeboats.
Deepak Go down further on the same page.
ReplyDeleteIt also says
1. a person or thing that breaks something, such as a person or firm that breaks up old cars, etc
Go down even further to the thesaurus section. It says
Noun 1. breaker - a quarry worker who splits off blocks of stone
20D - Snake endlessly "climbs up" the limited niches, characteristic of the tree.
ReplyDeleteThats probably how it got reversed..
20D That should lead to OBEHCI. Something did go wrong here
ReplyDelete20D Unless Charecteristic was meant as an anagram indicator. A bit weird
ReplyDeleteGood Morning all
ReplyDeleteTiramisu, Schmaltz, marmoset, obechi all new words to me. I too break my head for anno of breaker couldnt decipher.
I am surprised NJ has given some easy pickings in reliance, started, impart, premiere etc.
Happy days ahead...
Mathu
Suprisingly even I got a decent amount of answers (compared to how I normally fare on NJ days)though Tiramisu, Schmaltz, marmoset, obechi are far-fetched.
ReplyDeletePhew! Just finished reading up the annos and the blog. :) Some better offerings today, but still a fair amount of tripe...IMHO. :) Glad I didn't have time to spend on it. NJ seems to have stuck true to style - cryptic (good), inconsistent(bad), poor surface reading (bad), handful of gems (good)! I assume most have heard of the sandwich method! :)
ReplyDeleteBesides the various flaws pointed out by others, I have a question on clue setting:
11A: BLOCKADE - Shouldn't the clue read "at the borders" instead of "in the borders"? It seems to me the clue as is, would lead to K{BLOC}A DE. Is this a fair assessment?
As Mathu said, good to have some easy pickings early on to help w/ a thankless job. :)
I'm glad that at least it wasn't as bad as yesterday's set. Finished it within a couple of hours. Cheated on OBECHI (while penning it as OBECHE!) and IMPART. And got to RAWALPINDI in a round-about way (no, nothing to do with DISCOURSE :D).
ReplyDeleteColonel, I completely agree with your comment on 23A. :D
As for BREAKER, I assumed it meant quarry worker, as Shyam suggested.

Perhaps, a case of the Printer's Devil at work. Could have been "on the borders" originally.
20D
ReplyDeleteFree dictionary says "Obechi"-tall west african trees.Hope it is correct.
Padmanabhan
Hi
ReplyDeleteSnake endlessly climbs up the limited niches, characteristic of the tree (6) - {aOB<-}{sECHIn} How did ICHE get reversed?
I think un-limited niches, would be more apt in this clue...otherwise only one person can be counted on for anno....none other than???
7 Dn- a - autoban I hope.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeletei am seeing "a" as an abbreviation for road in the below link. Dont know how though.

Note : Not sure whether i can post a link to this blog. Please advise.
Thanks

Textile dealer will note the speed demon out on road (6) - {ME}{RaCER}
ReplyDeletewhy is note "me"??
Koushik,
ReplyDeleteDo Re Me Fa So La Ti/Si... they are European names given musical notes corresponding to the Indian Sa Re/Ri Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni. Sometimes the CW setter may use Te instead of Ti.
