Hi all,
ReplyDeleteSorry for the goof up. I completed the CW at 7 this morning as I had to go out early and instead of clicking on 'Publish' by mistake I seem to have clicked on 'Save as draft'
Just got back and got a call from Suresh to ask me why the blog was not up!!
ReplyDeleteColonel,
ReplyDeleteI think 24Ac should be TRIUMVIRI.
19A (-W)HINGE
ReplyDelete26 - Oriental at the mouth goes to the midpoint of this European river (5) - RHEIN Anno pending
ReplyDeleteOriental at the mouth would be E from easterner.
Goes to the midpoint would be the position indicator for E. RHIN is a small river in Europe and so is RHEIN. So Europeon river doing double duty
Thanks Satya & Suresh,
ReplyDeleteHazards of doing the CW without the paper
Suresh
ReplyDeleteI think it is RHINE becoming RHEIN, but they are the same rivers, right?
Rhine and Rhein are the same. But Rhin is a small 125km long in Brandenburg, Germany. Look it up in Wiki or Freedictionary.com
ReplyDeleteCan some one tell what is "FF" in Taffeta?
ReplyDeleteColonel, your blog is more addictive than my morning cup of coffee, was puzzled why your today's post was not up in time.
ReplyDeleteIt could be that E from RHINE (E being RHINE's mouth), a European river, moves to the midpoint giving RHEIN (which is the German name for the same river).
ReplyDelete@Benkiman: Very loud in cryptic crossword means ff from fortissimo in music terminology.
ReplyDeleteI meant VJ's anno. Neyartha has been playing with two different names for the same river.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that Neyartha is playing with different spellings of the same river. I fell that my comment of 10:34 is right.
ReplyDeleteHey guys, I goofed up too. As Deepak's blog was not up when I left home, I sent a mail to my other id with my comments attached in a word file hoping to post after reaching office. When I openned the mail in office, I found the attachment had not been attached. Will post those comments later after someone reaches home and mails it to me.
ReplyDeleteThis anno contains all the ingredients of the clue.
26 - Oriental at the mouth goes to the midpoint of this European river (5) - RHEIN Anno pending
This I felt was RH(+e)IN(-e).
European river=RHINE,
Oriental at the mouth (of a river)i.e. at the ending=E
This E goes to midpoint of the balance ie RH-IN
becoming RHEIN, which is also the same (this) European river.
Suresh, isn't E already a standard abbreviation of oriental? Do we need "oriental at the mouth" to get E?
ReplyDeleteBy the way, what is the theme? Is it light and sound? With diaphragm, autofocus, sound and voice?

Kishore
Yes, that's right. But in a pedantic mood and also to answer VJ's query above,
This is a down clue. So the answer is written from top to bottom.
However, in the E shift operation, let's say we write the word as usual from left. So we start with RHINE.
I was wondering whether E was at the mouth of the river. After some thought, I concluded that
it is so, as 'mouth' is not where a river originates but where it joins an ocean, so rather at the end.
VJ, There is only one E and there is no necessity to indicate its position as we start the wordplay operation, but the setter is helpful. I believe 'at the mouth' is integral to the wordplay and is not a mere embroidery.
I thought the theme was doubles:
ReplyDeletePhotography: DIAPHRAGM, {AUTO{FO}{CU}S}
Communication:AIR{MAIL}, DIAL<- ,CALLER (3 here)
Legal:IMPEACHING*, HANGMAN
Building materials:HINGE, {PA{VIN}G<-}
Sound propogation: SOUND, VOICE
Electronics :DIGITAL COMPUTERram*,MICA
Household goods: {CI{GARETTE HOL}DER}, HANDbaSkET
After making this I concluded Communication was the theme, since in addition to the items listed under that head above, Handset, sound, Voice, Digital Computer, Diaphragm (in telephone/speaker), Autofocu (in webcam) can also belong to this set. Of course, one can get a communication about impeachment and hanging too :-)
Chaturvasi, thanks for your explanation. Using the indicator "mouth" to mean the last letter of a river's name was nice.
ReplyDeleteMy question was particularly in reference to Suresh's 1034 comment. He said "Oriental at the mouth would be E from easterner." The point I was trying to make was that oriental = eastern = E, without needing to clue it as oriental at the mouth, to mean, first letter of Eastern = E
Exactly my thoughts CV, that is why I referered to mouth of river as ending.
ReplyDeleteThat was a nice find, Kishore!
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed today's CW... to the extent that I got. :) Tougher than yesterday's I felt, but was good to read everyone's comments. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks!
This is the morning post I goofed up on:
ReplyDeleteHi
I walked down to the basement of the Col.’s apartment building and said: My car is right here. 5D is 27A just echoed that. I usually carry two 1As with me, they are at the extreme end of my upper extremities. Deepak, our cross talk of detailed appears in 14a. Learned Agapanthus and Oast House today from Google. Best liked the VOICE of the SOUND bell, unlike the cracked Liberty. HAND-(-bA)S(-k)ET was cute. Is today’s theme electronics (1d, 5d) or photography (1a, 2d) or sounds (21d, 25a)?
10A was straightforward, but I didn't like it. Agree(ing), treaty, accord(ing) -- it seemed to go around in circles.
ReplyDelete12 - Social visitor from China's capital replacing female American lumberjack (6) - (-f+c)CALLER
ReplyDelete7 - Silence taken out by model's high-pitched warble (5) - (-sh+t)TRILL
Can someone explain these to me? I am a beginner.
6 - Character attached to armour on a post inside an aeroplane (7) - AIR{MAIL}
In this one, what does "Character attached to armour" lead to?
Madhu
