    AMEN-able

Nice to see the two pillars of knowledge on either side of the grid.

  4. Except for 22D and 27A, which I could not solve, this was a pretty fast afair, comparatively speaking. 15-20 minutes, I'd guess.

  5. Oops! Affair, not afair.

  6. CV,

Read Muthiah's article in today's Metro Plus and ref.to your letter in it. I have a Hindi dictionary and looked up 'Jugaad'(pronounced as Jugaar) and the meanings given are- way, device, manoeuvre, manage etc. which has a +ve connotation whereas 'sodhappal' has a -ve connotation. Am I correct?

  7. I believe that the word actually means a kind of make-shift vehicle. From that it has acquired some extended meanings.

In any case, I have suggested a Tamil word that conveys the meaning of 'muddle' (in which sense the word is used, I believe).

Kishore and others should be able to explain better.

BTW, if you see the reverse of the Metroplus backpage (in Chennai edition, in which the Miscellany is printed), you will see a surprise in the ad at right bottom for a forthcoming Tamil film.

I was not aware of the film when I wrote to the Miscellany writer.

  8. C. G. Bhargav, not seen in these parts, is on a long visit to the US. He seems to have time hanging on his hands (as can be expected when grandfathers go abroad) and is writing thoughts from the working years gone by.

    See, if you like,

  9. CV, you are absolutely collect. It is a makeshift vehicle in its original sense. But it also signifies the ability to 'achieve the ends', notwithstanding constraints, and by extended meaning 'getting things done'.

CGB did sent the link to me earlier. His rem.s prove that he, not Kelvinator, is the coolest one.
