  1. Nice CW. Enjoyed it though I could not get the last part of 28A. Shall I say blew it?! Did the 1st & 2nd part thanks to crossings.

Occitan was new. I could not get the anno for 13A, though I filled it.

Scion for graft was also different.

  3. Another enjoyable compilation. Many of the lengthy ones turned out to be anagrams, made it a tad easier I feel

  4. Sir, bile ten spewed is not in book (2,6)

The above is a clue in firstpost crossword 30.

It is an anagram clue. I leave it to my reader to work out the answer. In any case, the solution can be chacked on the website www.firstpost.com
    (until crossword 30 is online)

I would like to know whether the def for phrase required is correct. If you don't think so, what does the phrase mean exactly?

I have seen the phrase followed by some dotted lines on the fly page of book for owner to write their name.

    1. Ex Libris {SIR+BILE+X*} X=ten - Latin for 'outside the book' - I just worked out the answer. Can't make any further paraphrasing.

    2. "Outside the book" or "not in book" is too literal a meaning.

Actually, from my understanding, the phrase means "From the library [of]". In the dotted line below the owner will write their name.

Usually the phrase 'Ex libris' will be printed in some antique/classic font to lend it an air of scholarliness.

I am not sure if the clue-writer's def, "not in book", appreciates all this.

Clue-writing requires some skill beyond the literal, some work with the dictionary, doesn't it?

    3. The BRB says,

Ex Libris - from the books of (used eg on bookplates). n (with hyphen) a name-label pasted into the front of a book, a bookplate

  5. This is what I got from dictionary.com

    ex li·bris
       [eks lee-bris, lahy-] Show IPA
noun, plural ex li·bris for 2.
    1.
from the library of (a phrase inscribed in or on a book before the name of the owner): Ex libris Jane Doe.
    2.
an inscription in or on a book, to indicate the owner; bookplate.

    Exactly as stated by CV.
