ReplyDeleteWas not sure whether meat was intended instead of meal in the clue, though meal too fits in...
You're right! 'Meat', it should have been.
DeleteWell, anyway, one man's meat is another man's meal, especially amongst humanitarians..
DeleteI wonder if blue birds eat blue worms.
ReplyDeletewhat a thought?? :D
Deletei thought all birds eat worms? are there vegetarian birds too?
Deepak, you are tantalizingly close to 8 lakhs mark. Happy to broach the topic: Will you breach it today?
DeleteMost likely yes. I wonder what will happen after another 2 lakhs as the counter has space only for 6 digits. Must look if they have counters with more digits
DeleteCongrats,Col. ! Keep up the good work.
DeleteRemember the dawn of a new millenium (2000) when they had a major digital worry!

Happy Birthday Richard
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, Deepak. I am travelling now and have been out of touch with the blog. By fluke, popped in today. Hope to be back home tomorrow.
DeleteGridman heard my prayers... (Gayathri)
ReplyDeleteNot really! As some of the members here might know, Gridman's puzzles are set on a continuing basis irrespective of when they are published - the set published now was composed some seven or eight months earlier. So there is no question of prayers being answered quickly.
Yet another neat puzzle from Gridman. Latria & Stretti were new words but cluing made them easy to solve.
ReplyDeleteOver all I thought the crossword was :
Fashioning a sapient essay eschewing Books is easy (2,4,2,3)
as easy as pie
DeleteJust to guillotine builder. (5)
Deleteright !
DeleteFashioning a sapient essay eschewing Books is easy (2,4,2,3) should have read
DeleteFashioning a sapient essay eschewing Books is simple (2,4,2,3)
Gridman has set some thematic crosswords. Now, after Gayathri's post about solvers' prayers being answered by setters (if no higher authority than these poor guys), an idea struck me.
ReplyDeleteGridman will try to set a crossword with solvers' words/phrases entered in his grid.
Enter here (from now until 12 midnight today, that is Wednesday) three words/phrases that you would like to see in a THC grid. Each must be not less than four letters and not more than 15 letters).
As you know there are constraints in grid-filling but Gridman will try to include as many as possible and write clues for the given 'lights'.
If the puzzle is indeed done and gets published in TH, the copyright will belong to Gridman and no credit whatever will be given in the paper to those who suggested the 'lights'.

I certainly remember old Melville D'Mello, who used to read the news on Akashvaani, and as a kid used wonder if his voice came from beyond the grave...

ReplyDeleteDebtor,creditor & balance sheet
ReplyDeleteWelcome, CA Prasad. As your title and your choice of words betray the fact that you are a C A, I quote to you PG Wodehouse on the subject of CAs:
Delete“He was a chartered accountant, and all chartered accountants have hearts as big as hotels. You think they’re engrossed in auditing the half-yearly balance sheets of Miggs, Montagu and Murgatroyd, general importers, and all time they’re writing notes to blondes saying “Tomorrow, one-thirty, same place.”
Ice in the Bedroom (1961)
Not all Chartered Accountants are dour...
Banks are sporting sign ' STRIKE TODAY '. Invitation to robbers?
ReplyDeleteBut much like in the recent ad for a well-known brand of safes (sorry, 'security systems'), the managers might well lull in the knowledge that they (I mean the safes) may not be broken. But I really feel sorry for the aged couple in that ad, suppose the robber frustrated that he is not able to break open the vault, comes to the bedroom and cudgels the half-sleepy inmates?
DeleteGridman's intention is to set a crossword with words/phrases suggested by members. It is not a thematic where most words belong to a single category.
ReplyDeleteSo the three lights that one suggests need not necessarily be from the same category.
Also remember that a grid will have words of varying length. So the suggested words may be of different letter counts.

ReplyDeleteCongrats Colonel. It is a wonderful blog & community that you have built & sustained.
DeleteCongratulations and Thanks a lot Colonel.
DeleteThis page for me is the most visited one after of course Google and Wiki.
Deepak, could the write-up in The Hindu have hastened the happening?
DeleteBecause at the time of S&B V, the count was 790,000-plus. It shot up so fast since then.
The blog gets around 2000 pageviews per day so 10000 should have taken around 5 days
DeleteHappy birthday, Richard. One step closer to ? Nay. As young as you are away from death!! Like I have claimed in my HCCfamily. Live every moment and cherish it as a gift and loan from God .
ReplyDeleteCol Deepak: Congrats on notching up the noughts at the right place of the figure !
Thanks also for the wonderful 'silent'company (have any of ye bloggers heard the Col speak out his mind? He is an epitome of a silent host to the garrulous guests that Sapna and I were!! you gave us at your sister's place and those wonderful folks around. I was pleasantly surprised to learn of your Mom's age. She looked the typical resplendent Kerala Matriarch. May God bless her. Great food too !!

I like the phrases. But G won't accept any entered past the deadline mentioned yesterday.
DeleteBesides, one of the phrases above is more than 15 letters in length and cannot go into a 15x15 grid unless it is split and put in more than one slot - which G rarely does.
