  3. What exactly is 'dressing down'?

If at home I am wearing a dhoti and a banian, have I dressed down? I don't think so. OTOH, if I go to a meeting of the Madras Book Club wearing a dhoti and a half-sleeved bush shirt (or 'slack' as we used to call it) with chappals to boot, I am certainly dressed down.

So it is a question of what dress at what place and what time, is it?

If a woman is lolling on the beach wearing a bikini or a man just the shorts, are they dressed down or dressed up?

As for a dress code, I am firmly of the opinion that certain workplaces are remiss in not enforcing one.
Whether it is western dress or Indian dress, there must be rules that these ensembles are allowed, these not. Yesterday when I went to an office and saw the dress of an employee I was wondering whether there wasn't a dress code in that office (they do have an internal committee to inquire into gender discrimination or sexual harassment). But the moment I mention this - dress code -, people, especially women, begin talking about their rights and freedom and all that.

    1. The Income tax Appellate Tribunal has a dress code for assessee's representatives appearing before it, like the courts have. Once, I was shocked to see a client turn up in Bermuda shorts. I had to diplomatically shunt him back to his car.

  4. If any working member of this blog has a 'dress code' at workplace and if a copy of that could be had, I would be most interested to see it. This may be emailed to me privately.

    1. The Rule does not prescribe it for the assessee himself, but only for representatives.

  7. Reply for Y'day's comments of CV Sir
    Respected Sir,

    Really What a Honour, Sir!

    Residing in Kanchipuram

The knowledge level I see from you people.... I am nowhere near.

I will be tongue-tied in the presence of people like ever-enthusiastic K, Richard, Suresh, Bala, Srikanth Ajeesh, PP, Suchi Sandy MB Paddu (we usually call Padmanabhan as Paddu - whereas he is known here as Paddy) and the author Col Sir and the Pithamaa, yourselves.

Whatever I am doing in the crossword now is because of Col's blog and XDunclued only.

When you met at Chennai, I was there only. But I was hesitant. Still it (hesitancy) remains.

When I get 'confidence' of facing you all, I myself will let you know.

Once again, I express my happiness for such a nice gesture from your end Sir.

    With high regards,
    Ram

  10. Orkut is still on Kaput mode.

CV: Thanks for explaining the meaning of Grihacharam !

Ram: the correct appellation is Pita maha and not pitama ! grande fathere ? A doyen? This word was popularised by that mythological serial Mahabharat that used to be televised. Bhishmacharya was addressed as Bishmapithamaha ! I wonder whether the suffix Ji was derived from Shri? Pitashri and matashri !
Again, I wonder whether the outcry Zindabad is from Urdu? Zinda aabad? Long
live? Then what about Murdabad? Very bad , bad !! I reckon, it is from Hindusthani?

Dress down is to go several nothes down from a prescribed formal wear. In Nairobi club, when one had to go the dining hall, one can be allowed inside only if wearing a tie and a jacket. Then the jacket was dispensed with and then only tie was permitted. But over a period, even this has been dispensed with and one has to dress up "" smart casual'' . If one went in without a tie, the Reception was ever obliging to lend a tie and then return it to them on the way out !!
Nowadays, in India , igt has become fashionable to wear a jacket without a tie and I find it very incomplete dressing !!

Dressing down is to rebuke someone severely for any misdemeanour or indiscipline. I wonder what the origin of this phrase was from. But one never dresses down when one reprimands but always it is one gets a 'dressing down' !!
