  1. There is a possible anno for 27, though the device may be frowned upon. I am sure the wily sree_sree will extract it.

    1. I thought slash denotes under or by 2 by 5, 2/5. With is by K(-w)

    2. Well my thinking:
      With/ - with
without - "with out" - with (w, an abbr. we use) out - expelled so ith
      1000 -k - so k inserted
      ? - for unusualness
Ah, sorry, the Col. is right. There's no ind for k going ahead or that it replaces w.
      Sorry. And thanks.

    3. K replacing W?
      Without- w is out
      1000(K)is in
K replaces W in first WITH.

  3. They are also called scrunchies. Dict meaning for 'scrunchie' is: "a fabric-covered elastic used for holding back hair (as in a ponytail".
A term I came to know when I visited the US.
Here our women will simply say 'clip'.

  5. YES. Congrats and thanks, Vaasant. Frankly when I subsequently checked and rechecked - and this morning - the theme escaped my own mind. Ha, ha, ha.

  6. Add Fireball and it makes a strong case for the theme.

  9. At 32a the original may have been ATTITUDE (a thematic word) but it seems I changed the first T to L as I may have been defeated by KNELT. Now, suggest a clue for KNELT.

  10. Or did I find the switch from L in (altitude)to T (to get ATTITUDE) hard. Hint, hint. Write a clue for what would have been a thematic word.

  11. After such high-flown discussions over this entertaining Xword, I have my own-level doubt here.
In 6A how is OR from VICTOR removed?
