    Tense is an Anagram Indicator
    One = I
    "battles" essentially = TT
    Anagram of knight + I + tt = TIGHT KNIT

      Joined is doing double duty as anagram indicator and the clue to be solved
      T+knight+I+t when joined is tight knight = joined.
