    4. Sorry. But can u elaborate what is an INDIRECT ANAGRAM & why this cluing is erroneous

      Delete
    5. An anagram clue has to have all the letters in the fodder. You cannot have a synonym for a word or words and then anagram them

      Delete
    6. There is a good discussion just last week on FB page of 1 across.
Like L for left is allowed but how R for right is a liberty taken and public transport is a nono.
Because Left for L is unique, right could be r or rt. Then public transport could be tram/train/bus/tube etc etc. So anagram on such multiple choices is considered unfair.

    1. I have googled extensively to check whether old boy could be used for father.

      Delete
    2. Old boy is an affectionate slang which in no way connects old man. Some dictionaries list Oldboy and Oldman in same page.
In any case , daddy to old man to old boy to OB is a long stretch preferably avoided.

    2. 18d yes. You are right.

    3. Is it indirect? Oh! We have to get domain from 'Area of interest'?

    4. Thanks for pointing, yes typo from my side, it was 30A

  32. My sincere thanks to all the solvers and commenters for setting aside some time for my grid.
Thanks to sree_sree for catching me on the indirect anagram , though it crept in inadvertently.
Vasant, is 18d an indirect anagram too?
Thanks to Paddy for encouraging me to bring out my next grid.
Thanks Gowri for the promised tale-piece.
I am grateful to the Colonel for posting my grid in the blog.

    1. Yes Ajji mam, 18d is an indirect anagram. For an anagram all the letters have to be there in the fodder.
Strangely, for all other clue types, indirectness is allowed but not for anagram ( and telescopes).

      Delete
    2. I understood Vasant. I am under the impression that I am careful while writing the clue. But in my enthusiasm to make the clue cryptic, I overstep the limit. Particularly when the clues look so simple and innocent as.the culprits today. Thank you for alerting me.
There is no lower limit for the age when one needs to be corrected, don't you think?

      Delete
    3. Strangely the way I read, it didn't feel indirect.
      The area of interest: domain
In a jumble indicating the mix in domain and
      N, ce.

    4. Yes mam. The fact that you are setting and leaving the indirect anagrams all other clues were enjoyable makes it truly commendable.

      Delete
    5. Looking at anagrams that way,it seems they are easiest to solve but that not that easy to make. You have to have all the letters but still camouflage it somehow.

      Delete
    6. AJ - u mean upper limit for corrections? For learning too. It is such a luxury - when u r 50+ & say I dont know. Can u teach me?
Not too many forums where u can do that.

    7. Yes Gowri, upper. I am 74 and can hold my head and say I don't know, teach me! I did my computer courses after 40, learnt car-driving at 50 to cite a few examples.

  33. I have a suggestion for the senior regulars here. Col. is planning another of his road trips. It is going to be difficult for him (of course he has been successfully managing it in the past) to keep to his deadline. So if a few of you can pitch in for blogging for a few days- like Ramesh does now- it will be a big relief for him. I have his permission to say so (That reminds me of a joke but later) I believe Ramesh is also not available for the next few months.
Volunteers- like Prasad,vasant,KKR- may get get in touch with Col. to sort out details.

    2. As long as it's available online I can solve with Anno's and send it to anyone volunteering to post.
You guys know my anno's sometime or oTT.
Also I solve in the night and wake up around 8am.
Or we can just post the blank clues and grid and have a Friday everyday!

      Delete
    3. Simple. Complete it at night and set the time of publishing as 8.30 am like Col. does for the Sunday CW (not special)
Vasant can also do that if he can find that extra half hour in the morning.
I suggest that you chat with Col. (mail/whatsapp) and fix up. I just feel that he should get some relief and I am not a good enough solver and may face some glitches too while posting.
