  5. If we want to be too punctilious...
    If a letter has to be shifted upwards in a Down slot, 'promoted' may be all right. If it goes down, 'demoted' or a similar expression.
    But if the word is in an Across slot, the letter moves only horizontally, either to the left (eastwards) or right (westwards). So some suitable term other than 'promoted'/'demoted' might be necessary.

    I haven't looked too deep into these things, but is every petticoat (slip) of the colour pink?
