  1. I had put in PROGRAM for 19d first and then changed on crossings. SMILE too fits into 8d, so I had put it on the outside of the grid, after overwriting the one written inside with OLIVE.

    23d is it supposed to be Poet BROWNING - GIN (no drink) ???= Brown=toast

  2. Kishore,
    Your anno for 23D looks good

  3. Talking of poisons yesterday, I remember reading on the rear (backside?) of an autorickshaw:

    Love is slow pisson

    (sic)

    I am not sure if there was a space in front of the penultimate letter.

  4. I saw this behind an auto the other day

    "Girl or more Poison than a Snake"

    I presume he meant "Girls are more Poison than a Snake"

    The clue and your answer:
    Prays for the king trapped in the ship (4) - {A}{S{K}S}

    How do you explain A?

    Kishore:

    In 23d 'no drink' may be a deletion indicator but in the clue it's 'ing' and not 'gin'.

    I am sorry for the solvers.

  6. CV: That's why the ??? in my anno. Maybe NJ expects GIN to be deleted letter by letter, in which case it would work ;-)

    I had the same doubt for ASKS. As yesterday's comments observe, NJ treats a, an, one and the as interchangeable.

  8. Is it not Lakshmi instead of laxmi?

  9. Prays = {A}{S{K}S}
    for the
    king = K
    trapped = Insertion indicator
    in
    the = A
    ship = SS

    {A}{S{K}S}

    VOILA!!

  10. Kishore,
    I deleted your comment since I deleted my comment which you had quoted. My new comment at 9:21 incorporates your comment which I deleted.

  11. Padmanabhan,

    Lakshmi can be spelt as Laxmi, it's a proper noun after all.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Laxmi is north Indian spelling. Remember that the setter is self-confessedly north Indian whereas we solvers are south Indians.

  13. 12 - At dawn left the British nobleman (4) - EARLy

    Deepak, where's the indication that it is y that is to be 'left'.

    Solvers cannot be mindreaders, can they be?

  14. Deepak, 922, perfectly fine.

    CV, 931, I think NJ uses left not as a deletion indicator but as what is called a left trim in text functions in Excel, ie. you pick up letters from the left.

    To each, their own poison ;-)

  17. Re: 16D

    I suppose "hood" is supposed to be gangster or at least what NJ thinks is ghetto for gangsta :p

  18. Alok,
    Hood is definitely Gangster, it is the Wink that is baffling

  27. chorale prelude, a short setting for organ of a German Protestant chorale melody, used to introduce congregational singing of the hymn. It has nothing to do with overture! In fact OVERTURE is an instrumental composition intended especially as an introduction to an extended work, such as an opera or oratorio.
    Ah, she must be the la belle dame sans merci!
