  1. As usual good and easy fare today

  2. In 23d O is accounted for. One may have to recall a phrasal solution in Saturday's Gridman (if I remember right).

G usually does not use this component. But I think NJ does regularly, though not oddly.

  4. Good and Easy is perfectly right. 2d reminded me of Bro.CGB, who seems to be AWOL.

The 17d remark was more humourous that any cartoon could possibly be. Way to go, DG.

  5. CGB is not quite settled. Besides, his daughter with children is visiting him.

  6. Humour is best when it is at own person's expense. But then how many will go for it?
I have always thought the Col was a frank, kind, generous person, with a child in his heart. I am really happy to have won his friendhip, though we live in different cities. One can never feel intimidated by his huge frame.

Sorry. It is in this very crossword, not Saturday's.

  8. CV848: Sorry to hear the first sentence. Glad about the second.

BTW, an article on page 2 about trepanning in Harappan times reminded me of CGB's bro.too.

  9. 6 & 1 openers seem to sum the puzzle although I have one or two doubts.

Support meaning seal ? Can anyone provide a context ?

5D the surface doesn't make sense to me unless it is meant as some variation of ..someone in his/her elements...

and of course my S.o.D (not any slang word, S is merely statement) comes from 17D as well. Thanks for the laugh Colonel.

  11. @Col : I suspect its O from of, like it is in will-o-the-wisp ?

  12. Actually, 'in (one's) element' is correct. 'Elements' would mean weather.

  13. I was going to say what Bhavan wrote at 0929 but again the Blogger was playing truant and, try as I might, it would not accept my post, though I was signed in properly.

  14. Well, when you 'seal' an agreement, you support it!

  15. Bhavan @09:06 How about putting a seal of approval, meaning lending support

I just now cottoned on to the fact that you were saying that the puz is 'fair' and 'square'.

Incidentaly, I was wondering whether it should have been 'squire' (a person) in that clue. However, 'square' is also a noun that means a straightforward person or a puritan.
