PLA(I)CE also appears in today's TOI Sunday crossie no.1350 as
ReplyDelete9 I set about some fish (6)
As mentioned earlier, I wrote a piece about undergarments in a local paper recently (see
ReplyDelete'Brief lessons' http://www.madrasmusings.com/readerswrite.html :: Yet, excuse my ignorance, I am in the dark about what exactly a 'roll-on' undergarment is.
Anyone know? Why has the Col. shied away from an illustration?
Parliamentary leader, oldest one in church (5,8) - FIRST MINISTER [DD]
ReplyDeleteFIRST MIN{I}STER also?
CV,
ReplyDeleteExplanation of 'roll-on' available at link in main post. Illustration not given for obvious reasons!
Ajeesh,
ReplyDeleteYour anno is correct, it's not a DD
15 - Bell sounding? I must leave (4) - GOiNG
ReplyDeleteI don't get it. What's the word in the clue that's a synonym for going?
Leave on double duty..
ReplyDeleteSo I should read it as:
ReplyDeleteBell sounding? I must leave leave ...
If so, it is surprising for a Times clue.
Unless there is an obscure meaning of SOUNDING that is GOING, I don't see how the clue works.
ReplyDeleteBhavan, I do think sounding=going. Flicking an example, "The gun went 'booong'" is the same as "The gun sounded booong!
ReplyDeleteTx Shyam. The closest I can find in Chambers is sound(v) = go off.
ReplyDeleteA pupil may tell his friend in the classroom: "I am bored. I am waiting to go home and play.... There the bell goes. Come on, let's run."
ReplyDeletegoes = sounds
19 - Referring to a head describing one who's learning with little effort (2,1,5) - {ON} {A} {P{L}ATE}
ReplyDeleteCould this be a DD - the 1st definition being HEAD ON A PLATE?
Sandhya
ReplyDeleteA good guess, but I think it's a charade as indicated by the Col, the def. being 'with little effort'.
All the other words in the clue neatly give the components shown above.
I would like to clarify on 15 across:
ReplyDeleteBell sounding? I must leave(4)Going- I leave-- Gong ,loses I-- leave. Bell sounding --gong.
A bit wonky, eh?
