ReplyDeleteAlternate spelling for Troy (Helen's land)or homophone of Troy?
23 - Horse-drawn vehicle in Helen's land is left in Bikaner (6) - TROIKA ? Anno pending
ReplyDelete(TRO[-y])([-b]IKA[-ner])!
Kishore,
ReplyDeleteI hit upon the Anno for TROIKA after 8:30, have added it in the main post
14 - Why not, I surely used up my wife's locked up material wealth (8) - LUXURIES Anno pending
ReplyDelete"surely i-y (why not)" is the fodder
sureli
wife=ux (genealogy)
locked up=instered
L(UX)URIES*
used=Aind?
Deepak,
ReplyDeleteYes, I noticed that. But as you rightly say, IKA is still unclear.
My 843;
ReplyDeleteThe full form of ux is uxor in Latin.
@Kishore: Great cracking of LUXURIES!
ReplyDelete23 - Horse-drawn vehicle in Helen's land is left in Bikaner (6) - TROIKA ? Anno pending (Addendum - {TROy}{IKA} - But how do we extract IKA from Bikaner?)
ReplyDeleteTo make a statue of an elephant, take a large block of stone and chip away anything/everything that does not look like an elephant.
Thanks, Sandy. I just cracked it after my ux left the room.
ReplyDeleteKishore,
ReplyDeleteGreat solving of LUXURIES. I was puzzling over UX.
In my 843, please read 'inserted' instead of 'instered'
ReplyDelete27 - God man you judge before the mathematician (9) - {RA}{MAN}{U}{J}AN Anno for 'AN' not clear
ReplyDeleteWonder if AN refers to "ante" (before) abbreviated commonly as "a" as in "am" but in a NJ twist, "a" can then be "an" since they are both indefinite articles.
I thought it might be UX or XU with outer letters of the word deleted.
ReplyDelete27 - God man you judge before the mathematician (9) - {RA}{MAN}{U}{J}AN Anno for 'AN' not clear
ReplyDeleteOr maybe NJ is looking at "before the" as the charade component and solving it as "an"..The articles are commonly ordered as A, AN and THE when we study English Grammar back in 1st grade (?) - yesterday was KG today it only makes sense we move up b'cos we are still here standing and taking the punishment !!
Veer, congrats on promotion to 1st grade ;-)
ReplyDelete@Kishore" Solving "Luxuries" has unfortunately earned you a double promotion to IInd grade!!
ReplyDelete@Veer: That gives me opportunity to solve tomorrow's complicated clues:
ReplyDelete1 Four by four (7)
16 Four by four (1)
Answers are already given above.
14 - luxuries
ReplyDeletewife = ux
material wealth - lures
i - i
BSS,
ReplyDeleteMaterial wealth is the definition for luxuries.
BSS,
ReplyDeleteSee Kishore's explanation in his 8:43 post
Kishore @8.48 : lol
ReplyDeleteUx-uxor etc. brought back old memories. In college, in one of the novels we had to study as part of English literature, I had come across the word - uxorious (= extremely attached to or dependent on one's wife) :)
ReplyDeleteUxoricide is another matter.
And nUX vomica can be used for Uxoricide.
ReplyDeleteReally? Kishore. I use it all the time for stomach upsets.
ReplyDeleteQuick question:
ReplyDelete20D Separate the husband finally from his sweetheart at home (7) - {D}{hIS}{JO}{IN}
How is "h" taken out of "his" ? I thought the finally was just for taking the "d" out of husband.
Thanks,
-VP

ReplyDeleteI'm afraid you may have invited the mischief of the Criminal Procedure Code, section... for abetment...
Suresh,Richard:
ReplyDeleteNux vomica better known as strychnine is a poison, a strong one at that and capable of causing death. However, like many other poisons like aconite, it is used in Homeopathy in very small doses as a medicine.
So, if you guys are using arsenic, bring out the "Old lace". ;-)
Strychnine as a poison is very difficult to trace as per one of Agatha Christe's book which I read some time ago!No Cr.P.violation here I suppose.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of small doses of poison, I am reminded of the following -
ReplyDeleteWhen an alcoholic was chided by a social reformer, saying: "Don't you know it is a slow poison?"
The guy said, "Hic! I am in no hurry either!"
Veer @ 9:00 - I thought of the same explanation to deduce "an" as an article "before the".
