  1. 14 - Establish hard behind (4) - {H}{AFT} Is this definition correct?

I had the same doubt until I checked in chambers and it has this entry:

    Haft(v) : To establish firmly

This meaning is not there in my dictionary

  3. Gridman seems to have used other words also connected with government a la Neyartha:

    Catnap ;-)
    Votive (really devoted?)
    Mask (Mukhota in Hindi )
    Wave (in election)
    Wooer (during elections)
    Alderman
    Despot (infinite number of them)
    Gone (after the election)
    Etc...

31a hedge reminded me of Ha-ha:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ha-ha

I first came across this word in Tom Sharpe's Riotous Assemby (nice comical book on South Africa's inept police during the apartheid times)

  4. Please read Assembly in above instead of Assemby

  5. Haft means impossible. ;-)

Since it is not there in the Col's dictionary. ;-)

  7. 1d - Ionic or Doric are ancient Greek dialects or styles of architecture according to the dictionaries I have been able to lay my hands on. Not sure how you derive 'Column' from it.

  9. A crossword may be rated good or poor
But we must know who does it, for sure,
    And for what reasons;
    Else it's just bludgeons
That all of us must willynilly endure.

  10. With immediate effect I am removing the Quality/Difficulty widget as I feel that what is being reflected there is not realistic, so RIP to that widget.
Henceforth one can comment on the Quality and Difficulty in the comments section itself

  12. Thank you, Deepak.

May I be permitted to inform others that before the Widget was taken off, it showed Good 2 and Poor 6 (among others).

  15. A big PHEEEWWWW! After that horror series, it's a huge and welcome relief to find a crossword with clues that made sense and answers that synchronised with the clues.
