      My Merriam Webster Dictionary has only "epicanthial" and no word like "epicanthi".

      in = insertion indicator
      first = I
      part of play = ACT
      lax = I(N EX)ACT

      This is how I had interpreted the clue

      Pole = N
      Sometime = EX ( late, former, onetime, sometime etc can all be ex )
      in = containment indicator
      first = 1 = I
      part of play = ACT
      is = link word
      lax = Defn

      NEX in IACT = INEXACT = lax
