    2. Bala,
      Wreaking:
Inflicting (vengeance or punishment) upon a person.
Expressing or gratifying (anger, malevolence, or resentment); venting.
      Bringing about; causing

Here is a listing of synonyms of wreaking:
creating, working, causing, visiting, effecting, exercising, carrying out, executing, inflicting, bringing about.
unleashing, expressing, indulging, venting, gratifying, giving vent to, giving free rein to

In the context that you have used - "wreaking havoc", wreaking just means 'bringing about'.

So, my doubt still stands. Wreaking would merely stand for 'causing' and not 'causing harm' as given in the clue.

      Delete
    3. I think you are correct technically, without the 'havoc' the 'harm' isn't to be found. But can't get WRECKING from the clue. Maybe Bhavan will come in with a clarification

  25. On wreak and causing harm. My understanding of the word wreak, is that it is used only with relation to causing something bad and not for causing something good. So, while it, being a transitive verb, has to be used in conjunction with a noun; and that noun would be something harmful.

Seen in this light, I do not think the clue is incorrectly worded.

  26. Thanks, Bhavan ad Deepak for the New year wishes.

If this CW had been sent to The Hindu, we do not know when it would have got published.

  27. Yes,you are right. I tried 'thee' also, but did not connect 'floors' to last letters. Good one from Bhavan.

He specialises in clue beginnings, but difficult to imagine how he manages it. I did not even notice it until highlighted.

  28. anguished cry: Mujhe bacha lo, Main jeena chahthi hoon: by the victim of the recent gang rape in Delhi is an outcry aimed at all of us humans, from a tormented and traumatised soul with a very strong desire to live in spite of what she has gone through. What kind of a life will she be living,if she is saved, for which we all collectively pray ? Similar to the unsung and long forgotten Aruna Shanbag who is at death's door perpetually in a comatose state, ever since that horrendous assault and rape on her personal freedom way back in the 1970s? The culprit in that case is roaming about freely now, with a minor jail punishment served, leaving behind an absolutely innocent victim to suffer a punishment of a lifelong near-death that was not to be hers?

These events come and go with a regularity that defies all norms of logic. A few candle light vigils, raucous and vociferous outcry on the floors of the parliament and deafening screams calling for death punishment in public and castration of the culprits will all die down with time , until the next assault on woman's rights to live her life peacefully and in freedom of movement unfettered by fear. Why are we as a democratic state allowing this? Are we a sick and psychopathic society? Are we not spiritually enlightened enough to stop this perennial assault on a woman's rights in a country which literally worships a woman deity and yet goes on to desecrate her body? Why are we constantly belying a maxim that societies are created by good mothers?

How many more Aruna Shanbhags are we creating by allowing time to be an all-time healer ? One tends to become cynical that there indeed is a retributive God who punishes the innocent females unfairly !

This was a letter I wrote to the press before the death of NIRBHAYA; only the New Indian Express published a very badly edited version. !

A VERY SAD ENDING OF 2012 DUE TO THE SAD DEMISE OF NIRBHAYA.

A monument of courage must be erected in every State,to signify what a woman stands for. NOT like MAYAVATI"S !!!

Back to crosswords: A very dainty theme crossword from BUZZER.
