8 D Maybe halt the final papacy of the church inside the church (2, 6) BY CHANCE (BAN+Y+CH+CE)
ReplyDeleteIs this just an anagram clue or any other type of clue?
DeleteThis is a charade. But church inside the church may not be that correct, Because ch is followed by ce. Could have been church after church.
Delete{B{Y}{CH}AN}{CE}
DeleteColonel, I am still unable to understand the Anno. Rather the format. There is no indicator that 'y' goes inside 'ban' and also the previous point of church inside church.. Maybe I am missing something...
DeleteThanks.
DeleteI have the same doubt like Afterdark about the anno.
DeleteI'll leave it to Filler to explain further
Delete8 dn Anno:
Delete(the final papacy Y + the church CH) inside (halt BAN)
the church CE
Defn; maybe BY CHANCE
OK got it now ..
DeleteOn understanding, it is brilliant
DeleteSorry i'm late today. Venkatesh's anno for the clue is correct.
Delete20 D Ans: TEETH (DD)
ReplyDelete10 more clues to go.. Guess it has been some challenge rather.

15A BADDE[-s](+B)T
ReplyDeleteBADDEST with S replaced by B
Venkatesh,
ReplyDeleteCan you pl. explain 'bad debts'. I too had it, but could not get the anno and it is still not clear- the debt part.
Normally we use Bad, Worse and Worst.
ReplyDeleteFirst time I have seen Baddest being used. Maybe it is mentioned somewhere.
Atleast Mike Tyson used it.. Baddest man in the planet
DeleteBadder and baddest are there in Chambers, though classified as slang.
Delete@ Col,
DeleteThanks.
Filler just said that anno is not correct. He did not mention that 'Bad debt' is wrong.
DeleteAfterdark,
ReplyDeleteYou've already put in your share of three, as such I have deleted you last comment.
Sure colonel .. :) I thought the house was open now
DeleteHouse is not open unless specifically mentioned by me
Delete29A-
ReplyDeleteI had earlier given it as 'keep one's shirt on'. But it looks to be 'keep your shirt on'. Filler/ anand to confirm.
Yeah,it is keep your shirt on. The clue doesn't make proper sense with keep one's shirt on.
Delete15A- Is "deb"- short for debenture- for bonds?
ReplyDelete15 The most horrible BADDEST
Deletetrade between stocks and bonds initially - change S with B

Deepak, looks like clues after 17d have got trimmed off somewhere and are not appearing in the main post
Copy paste error while publishing. Surprisingly no one noticed it earlier. I did get a msg from Ajeesh about it but he followed it immediately with another msg saying that it could be his mobile problem, so I never checked the post!!
DeleteMissing clues added now.
I happened to come in late today and did not go to the Acrosslite version. Instead I looked at the left items list to cold solve them and was surprised to see some of them missing. Hence, I stumbled upon the error.
DeleteYes, I did not notice it since I was doing it on across lite. Probably it is lie that from the beginning.
ReplyDeleteWhat a typo, Paddy!

ReplyDeleteA puzzle forwarded to me by a friend:
ReplyDeleteLaura and her friends have gone away for the weekend to a big mansion in the countryside. She is having a clandestine affair with, George, one of her friends and wants to pass a secret message to him. She sneaks into the kitchen and leaves the following strange list.
sew
val
bead
ice
ben
hop
mat
George adds a letter to each item in the list and instantly heads to a certain part of the house. Where does he go?
My addendum to the puzzle: Can you also guess what they might do next?
Kindly do not disclose the answer here. Your solution may be sent to kishoremrao@hotmail.com
DeletePaddy, today's TH Sunday Magazine has an article about Anu Garg of AWAD
ReplyDeleteThank you Kishore. I had missed it, but read it now after seeing your note.
Delete10 It takes approximately 3 days for Jesus to do one of these (7) MIRACLE: Easter: Third day after Crucifixion

4 Think and understand a compilation of essays (6) DIGEST [2]
5 It’s utterly useless to fear hearing about a movie (5, 3) BLOOD-RED D RED ~ Dread. BLOO ~ Blow?
5D- anno is partly correct.
DeleteDef.-Movie- Blood red
ReplyDeletefear (hearing)- dred
bloo- useless? (I can't get it)Is it blow as in 'blow away' meaning waste?
BLOO ~ Blue/ miserable/ utterly useless
ReplyDeleteIt's not bloo - It's blah - utterly useless
DeleteKishore's insruction is incomplete.
ReplyDeleteAfter inserting one letter in each of those words, you have to string together the inserted letters to form a word that is the answer.
Hint: Think of a famous first line in a film song in a Mani Ratnam movie of yesteryear.
Nice puzzle
DeleteThe fifth word in Kishore's list is BEN.
ReplyDeleteIt will be of greater help if the given word is BENS.
Still a letter has to be inserted there as you do in all other cases.
Sew bead and ice helped me
DeleteMy entry into the puzzle was also through BEAD.
DeleteIf anyone has still not got the answer, I can give yet one more hint.
If that too does not help, yet another hint can be given and at thatt stage none will be without the answer.
I mean old Tamil movie of Mani Ratnam.
ReplyDeleteMy apologies for missing what CV has pointed out. Since I had solved without that instruction, I did not see the need for it. One friend of ours solved with his heart and lodged the pair in some other quarters. His logic was to look for a seven letter location in the house.
ReplyDeleteUnlike crossword clues which are expected give all instructions of anagram, insertions, deletions etc. most other puzzles require you to figure out the next step for yourself. Maybe that is why this puzzle did not have that specific instruction, which CV has rightly pointed out. No doubt, after solving it himself.
DeleteAjeesh has got it
