    3. 'Seer' was also a measure of volume for grain. It was made of four 'pavs' (plural of pav). I remember, as a kid, having seen at home a shining cylindrical receptacle made of copper, used to measure rice.

  2. In Tamil we had 'aazhaakku'.

I don't know how many of these made something else ("padi"?), but every home had this measure at home.

Street vendors would use it while selling goods. Housewives might use it for measuring ingredients while cooking.

    1. 8 aazhakkus made 1 padi & 4 padi made 1 marakka. Seer (pronounced as 'saer' in Tamil) was a measure of weight.
Cooking quantities have shrunk with shrinking of families (nuclear?) and aazhakku is considered too big!

    2. Wasn't 8 padi one marakkal? There is a Mukuruni Pillayar in Meenakshi Amman Temple. We were told that they make one big kozhukattai made out of 3 Kuruni's (aka Marakkaal). But the math doesn't work correctly. Any insights?

    3. Sorry , missed out something .. And one kuruni was supposed to be 6 Padi

    4. You are right. There are 2 variants of marakkal- 4 & 8 padis.

    5. I came across "mukuruni pillayar" in a Tamil story that I was reading. Didn't know the background to the name. Thanks, AD, for your note.
