  1. 10 Guess what the benighted marksman did? (4,2,3,4) SHOT,IN,THE,DARK (CD)

I would classify this as double and cryptic definition
    (d&cd)
    straight defn: Guess
cryptic defn: what the benighted marksman did?

    1. What is a double and cryptic definition, does that mean two definitions besides a Cryptic definition?

    2. It has double definitions - one straight and one cryptic.
Depending on their positions, we put it as
d&cd - where cryptic definition comes second
c&dd - where cryptic definition comes first

      For details, pl refer http://www.crosswordunclued.com/2010/02/cryptic-double-definitions.html

    3. Now, tell me if the second def is indeed cryptic.

  2. I disagree.

What is 'cryptic' about the second def 'what the benighted marksman did'? It is another definition, maybe more descriptive, picturesque, pointed, precise than the other.

  3. 15A BASENJI, I am coming across this word for the first time, Ji...

    2. While LKA put lots of 'ji' in his missive yesterday to Rajnath Singh'ji': Deendayalji, Nanaji, Vajpayeeji, he overlooked the first in the list probably as it already had a ji - Mookerji!

    3. Was there a need for 'unusual' to be there?

    4. Great observation. LOL.

A part of this letter I saw yesterday in a website where while quoting a sentence they had missed out a word and annoyed me. It is quite correct in the original, a facsimile of which appears in today's papers.

    5. In some religious discourse I heard that names such as Trivedi, Chaturvedi, Banerjee all denote that the person concerned was well-versed with a certain number of vedas.
If I remember right, Mukherjee too belongs to that category and it is a corruption of Mukhopadhyay.
So in the abbreviated, corrupt form it already has the honorific ji.
'Nomphilist' Richard or someone else others might confirm what I have written above from memory.

    6. You are right.

I am told that Bannerji stands for Bandopadhyay, Ganguly for Gangopadhyay, Chatterji for Chattopadhyay and the like.

  4. I got LUMEN from the second def. Didn't know the 'hollow' def that I learnt on seeing today's blog and later looking up the dict. Thank-you blogger and blog owner.

    1. I didn't know that either until I looked it up.

I thought I had provided an on-line link to that definition, but forgot. Have updated it now.

  5. 30 Moves smoothly, these glass mounts (6) SLIDES (DD)

If we say 'Came I', it means 'I came' - after the shift of the parts of the sentence.

The parts are changed for dramatic effect.

If we change the parts of the clue sentence, the sentence becomes ungrammatical, as the verb must be 'move'.

Am I being too persnickety or is there some point in my criticism?

  6. what the benighted marksman did?

what the marksman did - gives us SHOT
benighted leads us to - IN THE DARK
Pl note the ? mark at the end.
This shows it is not a Straight Definition.

    1. Thanks for your kind explanation, but I stick to my opinion that the sec def is not a CD, despite all that you say and the QM.

  7. I felt references to states in the US; NJ and FL should have been indicated. There are too many meanings to derive for state.

27 A plural in awkward shape for a woman who has never given birth (9) NULLIPARA

Could this have been worded differently. 'form' or something similar instead of 'shape', to make better sense?

    1. Agree on the "state" comment. But then, I have gotten used to this setter specifying state to mean US state consistently, so I look there first :)

  9. Was there a need for 'unusual' to be there?

    AfterDark's comment above.

Unusual because the Basenju does not have a bark

  10. Alas ! the beginning of today's crossword is my agony as ORKUT refuses to give me a grid and a Black square stares at me !! May have to try loading later .

CV's link on crosswords was hilarious to watch, but again, alas, my Notebook got corrupted and all my stored data will have to be restored only after getting back to CBE. For the nonce, I'm operating on Google only. Luckily, my wife's side is in Japanese version which is still in tact. She has forbidden me from going there as she's afraid of a similar fate for her too !! Woes of my life !!
