    3. Google!

Google 'Pongal 2015' and you get "Wednesday, January 14"

    4. So says Google, but it's being celebrated only on the 15th in the places where it matters

    5. Exactly. Just wanted to illustrate that Google, like the law, can sometimes be an ass

  2. My COD is 7Dn Retreat alit (4,4) TURN TAIL ALIT*

I think here the definition Retreat can be taken as Anind too to re-treat 'alit' to get the answer.

    1. No double duty. I think it is just a RA

    2. Reverse anagram, where the anind is in the answer instead of the clue. Here turn is the anind...

    3. Thanks, Kishore. Am not so familiar with Reverse Anagrams. :)

  3. Once again a brilliant teaser. Started late. Got stuck with reference book as DIC somehow and missed the longest clue. :( thinking of it as To scan the memory bank. Sometimes such predetermination is tough to shake off.

  4. 1D - in the anno if Godown is mentioned as one word , it will be easy to understand.

  5. For the third day in a row, Arden has come up with a clue that defied my attempts at parsing! Today it was ORIGAMI. Thanks to Arden for a challenging and very enjoyable puzzle. Thanks to DG for the blog, and to Kishore for the parsing of the troublesome one!

    A couple of doubts:
    - 23d: is "mountain" (singular) appropriate for RANGE?
    - 24d: is picture = OMEN? I haven't come across this synonym before and I can't find it in either Collins or Chambers (the online versions).

Also, in 1d, 21a, 3d: the phrase is normally "go down memory lane". I don't remember having heard/seen it used with "the" coming in. It's not wrong, of course, but has anyone seen this usage elsewhere?

    2. Yes the phrase is "Go down memory lane"

    3. Of course! How did I forget the movie? :(

    4. You do have a point Abhay. The movie is "The Omen", not just Omen.

  6. I filled a few... I filled a few more with no/ doubtful annos and for the rest it was Col./ Kishore combo to the rescue. I feel the bar has been raised today.

    1. Alit is the past tense of alight. But the sentence is weird.

    2. Thanks, Suresh garu. Alit part I could get but was unable to link it suitably with various meanings of 'retreat'. Hence my query.

    3. I don't think the phrase is so weird.
Retreat is also a noun with the meaning 'resort' as in a holiday resort.
Alit can mean "all illuminated", "brightly lit" as Delhi buildings look on Republic Day.
Today streets near a political leader's house in CHN are alit for the Pongal day tomorrow.

    4. Thanks, CV Sir. I get it now! So it means 'A resort that was alit" in other words 'illuminated".

  8. Always thought the phrase was - "Go down memory lane", not - "Go down THE memory lane". Am I correct? This had me puzzled for a while.
