  2. I am a rank beginner and trying (desperately) to get in to solving The Hindu Crossword. Here is my sketchy attempt at solving 12393. I was excited solving so many. I got lucky, I guess.

    I would love it if someone from the blog reviews it and comments. Thank you.

    2a Fortune is LUCK. Not all i.e. LUC, I, and declared initially is D i.e LUCID
    3a Dry debate anagram = Teddy Bear
    4a Hospital sections = WARDS + On = ONWARDS
    5a I guessed the answer to GLISTER and reverse engineered the clue as G from good and LISTER from germ fighter Joseph LISTER. Not sure!.
    6a Pure guess was THEME. No idea how the clue works!
    8a Cut off and leaf holder = STEM
    9a Bundle is wad and back = DAW. I found out (Google) that a knave in cards is JACK hence JACKDAW a crow ! Phew!
    10a Nice tax anagram to result in INEXACT
    11a Lads + sorry extreme = Y anagram is SADLY
    15a Green Site developed is SERENGETI
    21a WROTE. Is it Rote for learning method and recorded is also Wrote?
    22a Not sure of this! Detectives = CID drawn back = DIC then I worked it as DEDICATED. But don’t understand the clue
    24a Casino patron is GAMER. (Courageous person!)
    26a Not sure of this! a necessity = A MUST and A then I guessed it as SATSUMA (Mandarin) but I did not understand the clue ‘a son’
    27a South Arcot = SA (I am from the North). Most of TOMATO = STOMATA!.
    28a I thought it as GREECE used to get GREASEPAINT. Don’t understand the clue though!

KJC: If you see the left side of the blog the notations used for different clue types is listed such as Anagrams, Cryptic Definition, Reversals, Hidden Clues, Charades, Containers, Homophones, Double Definition, Acrostic, Letter selections and deletions, &Lit, Reversals and many more. You can browse the net and understand the clue types. Anagram is just one of the clue types.
      In the solutions given in this blog after the clues you will find annotation of how the solution is arrived at and the clue types like DD (Double definition) is also provided.
      The colour schemes used is indicated at the end of the solution which makes us clear about the parsing of the clues to arrive at the solution.
      You may also refer to the Reference list provided at the end of the solution, which details the letter selections from certain words used in the clue.
      I encourage you to compare your answers (with annotations ) with that of what is given in this blogspot and many of them will be self-explanatory.
      If you still have doubts after this exercise, you can narrow your list and raise them.

  4. Is it possible to make the colour for Homophone Indicator and Movement Indicator more darker, as the present colour makes those words difficult to read.

  6. 20D- Is SS for saints? I thought it could be 'Sts.'.
    Thank you Gridman for bringing up nostalgic memories about my native district, which sadly is extinct- renamed as Villupuram dt. (... and North Arcot as Vellore dt.)
