Interesting point! Indeed there is a school of thought that believes Acronyms should only refer to those abbreviations that can be pronounced as a word like NASA RADAR LASER NATO to name a few, whilst 'Initialism' should be the term used if it is not a pronounceable name and the individual letters are all pronounced distinctly as with BBC FBI GST RBI etc.

DeleteI am a member of that school of thought and have mentioned the distinction here on occasions. Yet not all agree and acronym may be used for abbr. as well.
Delete+1 to Doc and CV sir. "Sufficient and/or necessary" is still not resolved in my minf. I understand "gst, perhaps" or "NASA, perhaps" to indicate abbreviation. I am not able to get gst, perhaps=NASA, perhaps=acronym/initialism.
