Dr RKE's TalePiece
A green story
The
mysterious death of ANTELOPES in the KARACHI zoo was a matter of
concern. The media spoke in DERISION about the incident and the
zookeeper could no longer TAKE THE RAP. He recommended the Government to
call a bio-researcher from SWEDEN, known for her FORESIGHTEDNESS and
ABILITY, to ASSESS the cause for the FATALITY. She had earlier received
MEDALS from the SECURITY COUNCIL for her work on the drying up of the
ARAL SEA and loss of its fauna. She came and made an IN SITU analysis.
The animals had died with a swollen RIB CAGE. A necropsy revealed
undigested matter blocking the gut of the hapless beasts. She traced it
to the green plastic packing of the GRUB sold by the DELI in the zoo.
The UNSEALed bags, strewn carelessly by the visitors, were eaten by the
deer, which had mistaken them for LEAVES. Such a PROSAIC explanation was
not sensational enough for the media, which had propunded ESOTERIC
theories of some INTOXICANT in the feeds sourced by a DISLOYAL official.
The incident caused the government to announce a ban on plastics. A two
TIERed TABLEAU was seen in the next Independence Day parade
emphasizing the dangers of plastic use.
17D- OK confused me also and I did not get it. Could Gridman have meant 'manage OK' for cope?
ReplyDelete17d otos cope (" manage ok")
ReplyDeleteAgreed I got the spelling wrong. However the American tribe is OTOE so would the plural be OTOES or OTOS?
DeleteFreedict. gives the plural as OTO and OTOS
DeleteThat is plural of OTO and not OTOE
DeletePlease see the link Col..It gives the meaning of OTO itself as native american.
Deletehttps://www.thefreedictionary.com/OTOS
Probably CV Sir can give his views?
Oto Indians is a split-off group of otoes (blue reservation). Generally both are used interchangeably, unless speaking of specific groups.
DeleteThanks KKR
DeleteI never knew about this tribe. Found it on googling for justification of otos.
DeleteThanks Gridman for giving me a new word and an entertaining grid.
17DN I think it is OTOS COPE {instrument used for ear examination]
ReplyDeleteNevertheless, OK still eludes
If you 'manage' you manage well.
DeleteIf you 'cope', you 'manage OK', 'manage just enough'.
Paddy got it. sree_sree got it.
Otoscope was easy for me as I use it daily to see the ear canal
ReplyDeleteNice GREEN story- very topical.
ReplyDeleteI counted 22 words.
Delete27a: I did not mean to get IAC from 'in any case'.
ReplyDeleteBut from 'fatality' which is 1Ac.

DeleteYou got it!
DeleteThanks
DeleteThanks paddy for revealed the code 1AC in 27Ac....gr8
DeleteI googled Otos as the plural of otus (owl).Could this be naive american?
ReplyDeleteOtus owlboy is a story/ musical.
DeleteMy solving was progressing fast with the 2 long verticals, but I got stuck in SW corner.
ReplyDelete8d guard/ ( "room not exactly' to council house! In britain))

DeleteSO from very.
DeleteNice puzzle! 1AC was nicely done. Biffed otoscope and got Security Council from checkers.
ReplyDeleteLOI was Snivel.
17D Otoscope defeated me. 27A: the reference to 1AC was unexpected. Gridman's puzzles are always a delight; today's sprang a couple of surprises as well.
ReplyDeletebeautifully clubbed the puzzle 1a with 27a...Gridman has provided easy grid. very interesting to solve this grid as PPT (pen-pencil-test).
ReplyDeletefor 27A...i struggled a lot. Gridman's rocked today. never expect the substitution of 1AC with as glee. superb.
