Dr RKEs TalePiece

Bartollini is a GENIUS at playing the CEMBALO. His rendition of Handel's LARGO is a treat to the ears. Even at his age of 85, he is GUNG HO about an upcoming concert at SHANGHAI. His only living relative, Marco, a GRANDSON, has tried to talk him into staying at a NURSING HOME, but Bartollini has refused because he is DEAD SET on practising playing his cembalo two hours daily. So, Marco has appointed a LACKEY to look after the aging musician.

Marco, being LEERY of the upcoming travel to China, REINS IN his grandpa who is INFECTED with a child-like enthusiasm.  In reply to Marco's SYRUPY pleas, Bartollini defiantly taps the silver FERULE on his walking stick on the ground, quoting the poetiC OVID lines (Fortune and love favour the brave). "I have not raised you from INFANCY, to be a brake for my plans" says he.  The ONGOING stand-off leads to an emotional DISTANCING between them. ENNOBLED by his grandpa's passion for music at a ripe old age, Marco finally relents. He books tickets for the 3 of them on EPSILON airways. He chooses this airline, although their food CONSISTs of stuff not YUMMIER than DOG BISCUIT, because the SOCIAL media have given it a star rating to it on all other parameters. It is still an IFFY thing if the trio will make it to China.

(Note: Being fed up of the depressing 24 x 7 news about Covid 19, I was keen on avoiding any reference to coronavirus in the tale, though that is the theme. SO HOw do you think I did?)

  2. RKE,
I like the way in which you have used the virus in your talepiece. You have really distanced it. Well done!

  3. I was fooled by Ferule- Ferrule. Stopped half way and could not proceed. Missed 'Ionises'too and the ongoing confusion.

  4. Ferrule is the stick old masters used to punish erring schoolchildren. We must have come across the word in Victorian novels. (Nowadays students punish teachers.)
    Ferule is a metal fastener.

    1. It's the other way around CV.
Ferrule is the metal fastener and Ferule is the stick

    2. We use Ferrule in wires to identify the wire.

    3. Thank you CV & Col. for the clarification.

    4. Of course, that is how I knew ferrule also. Never knew about the stick.

  5. Timely gridby bruno. lot of hashtalk words. The other side RKE's tale piece made our day energetic.

  6. Then i have to change it ferrule in the tale. I was not aware of the distinction

  7. I have just found that I had FERRULES once in a THC grid and I am glad that the def was for the right meaning as pointed out above. So I had done proper dict reference at that time long ago..

  8. So long after that you feel happy that you have not erred, thanks to database.Admire the enthusiasm and desire to be always correct.

  9. 'ferrule', made of metal (incl. silver) or some other material, is fixed at the end of a walking stick so that the stick doesn't wear off. That's the reason why I got confused momentarily. But I have never come across 'ferule' = walking stick.

    1. Ferule is not a walking stick but a cane used by schoolmasters to punish (or theaten to punish) erring children.
As per Free dic. Ferrule is the metal jacket provided for safety of softer materials like wood, platics etc. Again this ferrule 92 R's) is what is used by engineers for measurement, inspection etc. as indicated by Vasanth.
To add to the confusion it also says ferule is a variant of ferrule.

  10. We open TV , newspapers, WhatsApp, Facebook, we read all about this keetanu that's turning the world upside down ! Must have to solve crosswords on the same? Oh, please, spare us the ordeal !

Another depressing and disturbing news that we read about the guardian Angel's docs and nurses being set upon. Is this keetanu that poweefulthat it provokes superstitious folks to violence and inhumanity in graveyards? What's the govt and police doing to provide safety to those departed and mourners? Has this tiny microbe finds every which way to kill ? My heart bleeds !

    1. I don't agree about the theme of the crossword. What is engulfing the world also engulfs the setter. What's wrong in having such a theme?

      Delete
    2. That is exactly the point. When being engulfed there is nothing wrong in looking for an island for a breather.

    3. LOL... Sorry DNM and Raju. Next grid will be themed "vacations to far-flung places" - will I be forgiven then?

      Delete
    4. It's ok, Balaji. I just wanted a respite from reality.vacations are what we are all looking for .virtual or real.!At least, we can stop staring at vacant spaces. Crosswords are the only places where we can fill vacant spaces!

  11. i was little confused by 2 down, as the number of letters not indicating that it was two words puts you on a completely different tangent and IMHO did not help me..... Was wondering if this is kosher?....as the cluing classically would be 2 and 3 dn and (6,10) whereas i went around trying to look for a 6 letter word and completely missed the anagram indicator.

    1. You are right. But this has something to do with the Interactive version which doesn't support putting 2 clues together, IMO

      Delete
    2. But this (2 clues together) is available in Guardian interactive CWd as I see.

    3. The two clues should have been indicated as under

2 and 3D Dissociating clan working on staying apart (6,10)
      3 See 2 Down

    4. Vasanth, it's hard to recall when we had such combined cluing in thc.

      Delete
    5. Can't recall too. Certainly not after IA version was introduced.

      Delete
    6. Nor do I . I was also confused initially. Since there was no other option,I had to take it this way. I don't think I have seen it in TH at all.

    7. Sorry - I had submitted an earlier version with 2D and 3D together with the correct enum. My fault. Are combined clues taboo? I sort of like them... Helps me clue long words and phrases...

    8. we were just trying to recall.

  12. Current version of THC software is not updated for linked clues. I suspect Bruno must have used a workaround
