Dr RKE's TalePiece
MARK Shutterbug, had OBTAINed fame as a wildlife photographer, after his programmes on species DOOMED to become extinct, such as the Amazonian MANATEE, were aired on Animal Planet channel. Today, his mission is to film the mountain GORILLAS of UGANDA. The SENSELESS, SINFUL destruction of their habitat has reduced the number of these BIPEDs to a handful. He fortifies himself with a hearty breakfast of OATMEAL and GARBANZO falafel, before settling off on the field trip. His DEPUTIES have put up a TREETOP cabin but he has to remain ALERT, without any LAPSE in concentration, as the land dwelling gorilla can climb trees. The SCANTY number of the apes means that a long time is spent in IDLENESS of the wait. His patience is rewarded, when he ESPies an aging silverback, an alpha male. He climbs down the tree noiselessly and TIPTOEs his way to a vantage point from which he can get an amazing shot of the gorilla. Soon a younger male challenges the senior ape and there is a lot of chest thumping. He expects a battle GALORE, but only a DEADLOCK ensues as the younger male has not the grit to go the whole hog. Mark is able to capture the expression of dismay on the losing animal's face beautifully on camera - a shot that is sure to win A TROPHY.
ADDENDUM: Mark Shutterbug is an AMPUTEE, having lost a leg to gangrene after the lick of the KOMODO dragon while filming on an Indonesian island. He continues undeterred by the IMBALANCE in his gait to raise awareness about wildlife conservation.
11a the ones:those cycling ethos
ReplyDeleteCould you be more specific rather than cryptic!!
Deletethose = the ones or that ones
Deletecycling = rotating (the letters in circular fashion)
How does cycling the ones or that ones give ethos ?
DeleteFirst get THOSE from "the ones". Then kick in the cycling.
DeleteThe letter E rotates and gets in front of THOS to become ETHOS. In the next cycling S will cycle but that is beside the point.
Then it is almost like an indirect anagram, isn't it?
DeleteCol, if you recall, we had similar discussion earlier on cycling clue. This is not classified as anagram but letter shift from top to bottom and/or vice versa
Delete19d anagram def by example
ReplyDeleteWhere is the example?
Delete"She's fainted as well? Bet" — (is one of the anagram of ) "these wild Beatles fans! "
DeleteWow, a 20 letter anagram!👍
DeleteAmazing clue! Well cracked Prasad
Delete+1
DeleteGreat
Delete+1
Delete18a a key partner:lock
ReplyDeletePlease give full anno!!
Deleterefusing to yield to pressure: unyielding/dead (set) on
DeleteThanks
DeleteHow does DEAD go in front
DeleteDead goes in front because a dead lock is one which does not yield to pressure.
DeleteI didn't have the anno until now
Couldn't get some in the upper left quarter, like DILEMMA (was looking for an edible jam!), ETHOS, ADDRESSED and DOLPHIN. Also ANAGRAM, though i could guess it from crossings. Any theme Gussalufz?
ReplyDeleteSo was I-looking for edible jam. But ultimately was able to get the word thanks to spotting spoiled as anind.
Delete24D the wordplay as shown by Colonel is easy. Is it ok to define biped as "woman, perhaps"?
ReplyDeleteNot wrong, I suppose.
Deletebiped is any animal on two legs. so yes. man used to be favorite but changing times.
DeleteIf man is yes,why not woman?
DeleteMade us work hard, but in a fair way. There were quite a few where I had to look up the blog to get the anno.
ReplyDeleteYes,there is no work for Rev. in 2D. There seems to be no exchange of syllables.
Wow! for the Talepiece.
ReplyDeleteBut I am unable to find where fact ends and fiction starts. Shutterbug is a nickname?
+1
DeleteLike Brij Bhasi Mithaiwallah
DeleteExactly
DeleteAnagram of anagrams was fantastic. No way I could have solved it.
ReplyDeleteThere seems to be a theme. There is a Nina definitely
ReplyDeleteAtrophy,Idleness,Numbskull,Imbalance,Senseless,Scanty,Doomed... all pointing to 'Stay at home'?
ReplyDeleteDon't think so
DeleteI was able to find one Mark Picard, wild life photographer.
ReplyDeleteDont you remember Krishnan?
Deletehttps://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madhaviah_Krishnan
DeleteQuite a beautiful talepiece.
DeleteThank you CGB. Caught up on Krishnan.
DeleteSince RKE had mentioned Mark (now I am able to see he was just using one of the clued words) I was looking for Mark.....
DeleteDouglas N Adams
ReplyDeleteWell spotted, Anantakrishnan!
DeleteCouldn't get the theme
ReplyDeleteMeticulous attempt by you, Col in highlighting the letters to reveal the nina. Can you please also highlight the first A in 7DN?
DeleteLast Chance to See by Douglas Adams. Looking at endangered species. Manatee, Komodo, Dolphin
Deleteand Gorillas
DeleteDolphins are not an endangered species
Deletethe one featured in the series seems to be, the chinese extinct river dolphin

19 down. Can some one be more elaborate? I'd have never got this answer. Even if I had to do a headstand! ( sarke bal !) I agree we have to spend time indoors, but must we do shirshasan ? What kind of a clue is this ? There's a limit !
ReplyDeleteA trophy for atrocious atrophy !
It is called def. by example. 2 anagrams (sting of words) are given- A is anagram of B. So by def. it is an anagram. We have had it before but not so long- a little difficult to comprehend until pointed out by experts- Prasad has done a wonderful job of deciphering it.
Deletehis complaint is about the length of anagram.
DeleteStill not clear. Please unravel and annotate for me. I'm still on my head!
DeleteLike ROME is anagram of MORE, it is one of (anagrams) of MORE. The first twenty letters, or whatever gib that is, are anagram of last twenty letters in the clue. "is one of" is the only clue.
DeleteShe's fainted as well Bet (is an anagaram of) these wild Beatles fans
DeleteIn 12A, totals as Anag indicator - is it ok ? I checked with Gussalufz - in US it means destroyed , I am told.
ReplyDeletelimited usage NAM, dictionary support is there. but i feel crossword solving will be totalled if such limited usages get into ananinds. def might be ok.
DeleteI've seen it being used in India, It's there in Chambers as well 'N American' slang
DeleteWhen 'totals' means ' makes a wreck of' I don't see why we shoud not use it.
DeleteDoes it make sense? - this should be our criterion. Not whether it is common or uncommon.
Now try:
Rome's a gone case too (4)
There are some objections to that as well CV sir. Totals is North American Slang - hence some indicator is desirable. Even otherwise the dictionary mentions it as a transitive verb. Therefore it cannot be after the fodder.
DeleteMore?
ReplyDelete+1 i think a is extra but ....
